Abstract
A petroleum oil containing mercaptans is sweetened by mixing it with an aqueous caustic alkali solution containing a substance which is capable of increasing the solubility of the mercaptans in the alkali solution, in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas such as air, but in the absence of a catalyst for the oxidation of mercaptans to disulphides. The petroleum oil, which may be a sour petroleum naphtha or benzine, may be subjected to a prior treatment with an aqueous caustic alkali solution, containing no solubility promoter, in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas. The alkali may be caustic soda and the solubility promoter may be commercial cresol. The treatment with the caustic alkali solution containing a solubility promoter may be carried out in two or more stages. The sulphur content of the oil is unchanged by the treatment, the mercaptans being apparently converted to organic disulphides which remain in the oil. No regeneration of the caustic alkali solution is necessary.
