Abstract

Unsaturated alcohols having 8-22 carbon atoms in the molecule are converted into sulphuric esters without destroying the double bonds by treating with an addition product of dioxane with sulphur trioxide and/or chlorsulphonic acid an inert solvent may also be present. In examples, a commercial mixture of sperm oil alcohols is treated with addition compounds of dioxane and sulphur trioxide and dioxane and chlorsulphonic acid in the presence of carbontetrachloride and petroleum ether. The products, when neutralized have wetting and detergent properties.
