Abstract
296,999. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Sept. 10, 1927, [Convention date]. Aliphatic sulphonic acids.-Unsaturated higher fatty acids, such as oleic acid and esters thereof, are sulphonated by means of fuming sulphuric acid in the presence of halogenated unsaturated hydrocarbons. When the fatty acid or ester contains hydroxy groups, the quantity of oleum used is in excess of that required to esterify them. Monohydrate or chlorsulphonic acid may be used to esterify these hydroxy groups when pre: sent. The products, which are readily worked up, are acid and lime resisting. According to examples, (1) oleic acid and castor oil are treated with fuming sulphuric acid in the presence of trichlorethylene; (2) trichlorethylene is similarly used in the sulphonation of castor oil by means of fuming sulphuric acid, after a preliminary treatment with monohydrate or chlorsulphonic acid to esterify the hydroxy group.
