Abstract
Products stated to have wetting, washing, and dispersing properties are obtained by sulphonating, neutralizing and extracting with an organic solvent mixtures comprising fatty acids and alcohols having a carbonyl value of 10 or below which are derived from nonaromatic hydrocarbons containing more than twelve carbon atoms by the following processes: (a) the hydrocarbons are oxidized in the liquid phase and subsequently hydrogenated until the carbonyl value is reduced to 10 or below or (b) the hydrocarbons are oxidized in the liquid phase in the presence of boric, acetic or benzoic acids or their anhydrides. The sulphonation is effected under mild conditions whereby the alcohols are converted into esters whereas the fatty acids remain substantially unattached. The unoxidized hydrocarbons and neutral substances extracted by the organic solvent may be subjected to further treatment. In examples: (1) a middle oil obtained by the hydrogenation of lignite is oxidized in the presence of manganese stearate and the carboxyl value is reduced to 8 by hydrogenation in the presence of a cobalt catalyst; the product is treated with chlorsulphonic acid in benzine and ether, neutralized with aqueous soda separated, and extracted with benzine; (2) hard paraffin wax is oxidized in the presence of benzoic acid anhydride or boric acid and sulphonated and worked up as in example 1. For ] the oxidation, naphthene hydrocarbons, hydrogenated brown or mineral coals and paraffin oil may be used. Specifications 360,002 and 373,642 are referred to.ALSO:Dispersing-agents are prepared by sulphonating, neutralizing and extracting with an organic solvent mixtures comprising inter alia fatty acids and alcohols having a carbonyl value of 10 or below which are derived from nonaromatic hydrocarbons containing more than twelve carbon atoms by the following processes: (a) the hydrocarbons are oxidized in the liquid phase and subsequently hydrogenated until the carbonyl value is reduced to 10 or below or (b) the hydrocarbons are oxidized in the liquid phase in the presence of boric, acetic or benzoic acids or their anhydrides. For the oxidation, naphthene hydrocarbons, hydrogenated brown or mineral coals and paraffin oil may be used.
