Abstract
338,457. Quartz et Silice. April 17, 1929, [Convention date]. Fused silica.-Relates to a method of moulding articles from fused silica, or other refractory vitreous material, and fining the material at the same time that it is brought to the required shape. According to the invention, a silica blank is heated to a very high temperature as described in Specification 283,174, the incandescent material is placed in a cylinder 1 between pistons 2, and it is then pressed so that it is driven outwards at a high speed through orifices 4 into cavities 5 formed in a mould body 6. The soundest portion of the silica blank is forced into the cavities 5, and the part that remains between the pistons retains the bubbles or flaws which existed in the blank.
