Abstract
484,173. Making hollow glass building- blocks. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Sept. 7, 1937, No. 24375. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1936. [Class 56] A method of making a hollow glass block or brick, containing air at a low pressure, consists in welding together two half bricks 5 along their free edges, reheating the join and then covering it with molten glass. The two half bricks 5 are moulded with shoulders 6 which, when the halves are pressed together, form a channel 7. The halves are assembled while still hot from the moulding operation, and they are then held between clamps or chucks 11 and rotated while flames from burners 12 reheat the glass along the channel 7. When the glass is sufficiently hot, a stream of molten glass 8 from a furnace forehearth 9 is run into the channel 7 to complete the join.
