Abstract

263,766. Quartz et Silice. Dec. 20, 1925, [Convention date]. Blowing; forming silica-glass articles.-A process for forming articles of fused silica, or of glass having a high content of silica, consists in softening a tubular blank in a furnace, and in subjecting this blank, immediately it is removed from the furnace, to blowing in a mould, or in free air, to bring it to the required shape. The apparatus comprises a tubular furnace f, a mould b arranged beneath the furnace, a pair of shears c which work against the underside of the mould, and another pair of shears d, which are situated above the mould. The silica, blank g is supported by a balanced beam h which is provided with an index pointer l. A flexible tube o connects the blank with a reservoir m of compressed air, and a three-way cock n connects the interior of the blank either with the air supply or with the atmosphere. The furnace f may be heated by oxyhydrogen blowpipes, or by an element e which is heated by the passage of an electric current or by induction. An oscillating circuit may be combined with the apparatus for heating the furnace by high-frequency induction. The mould may be made of a metal or alloy usually employed for glass moulds, or it may be made of nickel or graphite, and it is heated electrically, preferably by induction. In operation, the movement of the balanced beam h indicates the softening of the blank, and the operator lowers the blank into the mould and closes its lower end by means of the shears c. Air is admitted to the blank to blow it to shape, and the shears d are closed. These shears do not sever the blank but crush it sufficiently to allow the finished article to be broken off. A fresh section of the blank is heated while the softened part is being blown. In a modified construction, the beam h is arranged beneath the mould and supports a member which is in contact with the lower end of the blank. This member, when lowered, forms a bottom to the mould cavity and allows closed articles to be blown. With this construction, the shears c are dispensed with, and the article may be blown in free air without using the mould.
