[Class 56] A method of making a glass article having a hollowed or recessed foot comprises the operation of forming the recess in the foot by means of centrifugal force. A hollow body 1, Fig. 2, is blown on a pipe 2, and a heavy foot portion 3 containing a relatively large quantity of glass is applied to the body in the usual way. When the foot portion 3 has cooled to such an extent that the glass in the outer part 3a has set, the body is spun on its longitudinal axis by means of the pipe 2. As a result, the hotter and still plastic glass in the interior of the foot 3 spreads laterally under the action of centrifugal force, finally taking up the position indicated by the lines 7, Fig. 5, and leaving the required recess in the foot. If an article of oval cross-section is required, the sides of the body are flattened in the known way before the spinning process. The parts 3a may be cooled before the spinning, or the foot may be reheated at a glory-hole if the portions 3a are also required to spread to form a splayed-out foot.
