Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for.-A packing for the shaft b of an ammonia. refrigerator plant consists of a ring c, secured to the shaft by a diaphragm l of stainless steel, and pressed against an end surface of the casing by a spring m. The diaphragm l comprises two or more thin laminations and is clamped between rings f, against a shoulder on the shaft by a nut h. The diaphragm is clamped to the ring c by a ring i and nut k. The tension of the spring m can be adjusted by means of a nut n screwed on the exterior of the nut h. Alternatively the ring c may be carried by the casing and pressed against a collar on the shaft.
