638,152. Stuffing-box substitutes. SOC. ANON. DES ETABLISSEMENTS ISNARD FRERES. Jan. 14, 1947, No. 1293. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1941. [Class 122(v)] A sealing device for a shaft 3 entering the gear case of a machine, e.g. a vacuum pump or compressor, comprises two diaphragms 9, 10 provided with rings 7, 8 pressed by a spring 6 against collars 4, 5 on the shaft. The space 11 between the diaphragms is filled with oil and connected by a pipe 13 to the oil sump 12 in the gear case. In a modification, a further ring carried by a diaphragm is pressed by a spring against the other side of the collar 4.
