Gases and vapours, treating with.- In the shrinking or similar treatment of fabrics, hanging loops are formed by a carriage traversed over the stationary bars, the carriage having means for drawing in the fabrics at a rate greater than that at which the carriage moves. The fabric F<1> is attached to the, carriage f and the carriage is traversed quickly to the far end of the machine by longitudinal side screws driven from a shaft g. The end of the fabric is then detached from the carriage and attached to the end cross-bar a. The carriage is then slowly traversed in the reverse direction, a draw-roller k mounted on the carriage and driven by chains j<2> drawing in the fabric at a speed sufficient to form the loops F. A nip roller m carried by arms n mounted loosely on the carriage holds the fabric against a cross-bar long enough to enable a loop of the desired depth to form. A draw-off roller p with cutter t draws off the fabric on completion of the operation. The carriage may be driven by chains instead of screws.
