Abstract

8906. Drey, O. April 28. Pile-cutting.-The fabric 2, which is secured at the ends to form an endless web, is operated upon by the knife 105 near the bed 36 as the fabric passes along. The knife, Figs. 17 and 18, is pivoted at 70 to the handle 104 in front of a sliding block 103 on the holder 102. The knife is normally supported by a feeler-clip 71, which is connected by an arrangement of links with a hinged pin 59<a> which locks the block 103. Should the knife accidentally cut the fabric, the latter releases the clip from the knife, which then swings as shown in dotted lines, and the movement of the clip also withdraws the locking-pin 59<a>. The fabric passes, as shown in Fig. 1, over the roller 31 and the drawing roller or drum 11, and thence over the roller 12 to the roller 33. It then passes between rollers 15, 16, which are adjustably mounted on oscillating arms 14, which oscillating movement serves to lay the fabric in folds on a triangular arrangement of rollers or staves, a beater 13<b> carried on the arms assisting to lay the folds. At the base of the folds are a drum 34 and a lattice 28, both of which are preferably moved intermittently. These serve to carry the folds, so that the first folds come uppermost. From the lattice 28 the fabric passes over the suspended roller 30, and thence over rollers, as shown, to the compensating roller or device 43, which rests on the fabric, and is adapted to take up slack when the apparatus is reversed, such as when commencing the next cutting-track. There are two driving-shafts, which are independently in gear with the shaft 10 of the roller 11, the one actuated by the treadle 92 for giving the ordinary forward movement, and the other actuated by the treadle 93 for giving a reversing movement.
