Abstract
298,910. Hessling, W. Oct. 15, 1927, [Convention date]. Solidifying - Liquid carbon dioxide is expanded in successive stages first to a pressure slightly below the triple point pressure and then to atmospheric pressure in another vessel, the gas evolved in the two stages being drawn off and in some cases used to cool the dioxide before its expansion to just below the triple point pressure. The gas is compressed in a cylinder 2 and further compressed in a cylinder 4; it is then cooled by water and liquefied in a condenser 5 and expanded through a valve 7 into the vessel 8 at just below the triple point pressure. The gas formed is returned to the second stage compression cylinder 4, and the solid is conveyed by a device 10 to a chamber 11 at about atmospheric pressure. The gas formed in this chamber is returned to the first stage compression cylinder 2. The expansion to just below the triple point pressure may take place in stages. When the gas is generated under pressure, the compression cylinder 2 may be omitted, the gas from chamber 11 being returned to the generator. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the expansion may take place in a turbine or piston engine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
