Abstract

934,394. Liquefaction of chlorine gas. KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE ZOUTINDUSTRIE N.V. May 14, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18493/62. Class 8(2). In liquefying chlorine gas by step-wise condensation at 13, 16, Fig. 1, the second condenser 16 is cooled by evaporation of liquid chlorine produced in the process and at a pressure below that prevailing in the liquefying path of the condenser and in quantity such that only a portion of the coolant is vaporized; the mixture of gaseous and liquid chlorine being recycled through a duct 21 to the process e.g., a washing vessel 3 to which feed chlorine gas is admitted through a duct 1. Cold chlorine gas leaving vessel 3 is compressed at 7, 12 and the heat of compression is removed by passage through condenser 13 which is cooled by water or a refrigerant. In a modification the second condenser 30, Fig. 2, is cooled by evaporation of liquid chlorine withdrawn from the first condenser 25 and expanded at a valve 31 and is assisted by liquid chlorine withdrawn through a duct 32 from the cold end of condenser 13 and expanded at a valve 34. A portion of the uncondensed chlorine gas leaving condenser 25 is passed through an injector 38 and serves to withdraw a mixture of gaseous and liquid chlorine from condenser 30 and return it to a washing vessel 37 to which feed chlorine gas is admitted through a duct 23. Specification 353,704 is referred to.
