[Class 8 (ii).] Apparatus for producing solid carbon dioxide comprises a container a for liquid carbon dioxide maintained at a pressure above that of the triple point and connected to a container b through valves e, f. The container b is connected through perforated partitions c with an annular chamber bl connected throngh valve g to the suction of a compressor so that pressure below that of the triple point is maintained in the space b<1>. The valves e and f are opened to fill the container b without expanding the liquid carbon dioxide and then valve e is closed and the liquid allowed to expand through the perforated partitions c. The liquid in the container is cooled and formed into a dense solid mass, any gas being evolved rising into the container a. The upper perforated partitions may be closed by valves d which are opened as the block forms or the partition may extend the whole length of the chamber b.
