227,853. Patart, G. L. E. Jan. 17,1924, [Convention date]. Catalytic apparatus; ammonia, catalytic production of from nitrogen and hydrogen.-Gaseous mixtures, especially such as are used for catalytic syntheses under pressure, are compressed and circulated by a compound piston pump, the cylinder by which the circulation is effected being disposed in line with the finalstage cylinder and connected thereto so that any leakage from the circulation can only escape into the cylinder. Bypasses are provided to regulate the pressure and the rate of circulation. As shown, gas entering by the pipe 1 is passed in succession through the stages 3, 6, 10 of the compressor and through coolers 5, 9, 13 to the circuit 12, synthesis being effected in a reaction chamber 14 and the reaction product removed in a separator 15. The initial stage 3 is constituted by a double-acting piston. The gas travels on through a conduit 16 to the circulation cylinder 17, the piston of which is formed by an extension of the compressor piston. Part of the circulating gas may be by-passed through a. valve 21; and the gas supplied by the pipe 1 may also be by-passed through the valve 23. The cooling-device 13 may be situated at the point 13<1> beyond the junction with the circulation conduit 19. Several compressors may be mounted in parallel, the different cylinders being interconnected and one or more circulation pumps being used. The circulation pump may precede the final compression stage.
