Heat of compression, absorbing; valves, arrangement of.-A fluid-compressor for use in carrying out the refrigerating process described in the parent Specification has the working part of its cylinder 1, Fig. 1, entirely or substantially enclosed by a jacket 6 which communicates with the interior of the cylinder by a ring of small openings 3 for the admission through the jacket of the high-pressure vapours which act as a cooling-medium, the openings being so formed that their section changes from a circular shape at 4, Figs. 2 and 3, to an elongated shape at 5 on the jacket side of the cylinder wall; the openings 3 are uncovered by the piston 2 at the end of its stroke to admit the high-pressure vapours into the cylinder, the entering velocity of the vapours being increased by the shape of the openings so that efficient admission in the short time available is secured. The jacket 6 is connected to the highpressure pipe by an opening 8 of which the section increases gradually in the direction of the jacket, and to increase the efficiency of the admission one or more receivers with inlets and outlets of the same shape as the openings 8, 3 may be interposed between the cylinder and the high-pressure evaporator coil. The sieve and the liquid-separators arranged between the high-pressure evaporator coil and the jacket 6 are provided with similarly shaped inlet and outlet openings. The jacket and admission apertures may be applied to single or double acting compression cylinders with suction valves in the cover or the ends of the cylinder.
