Coke ovens.-In a coke oven having vertical heating flues to which air for combustion is supplied at two or more levels, the supplies of air for the different levels are kept separate from the regenerator onwards. In the oven shown in which adjoining flues 9, 13 act alternately as combustion and exhaust flues, the air for combustion in one phase of operation passes from the regenerator 2 through two damper-controlled ports 6 to two parallel sole flues 4 running the length of the oven. The two flues 4 communicate with the alternate heating-flues 9, the one by means of the lower ports 10. and the other through passages 12 formed in the partition walls between the flues. Gas is supplied through a corresponding sole channel, and the products of combustion are exhausted through the flues 13, part passing through the partition wall channels and part through the lower parts into another pair of sole flues in communication with the regenerator 19.
