[Class 51 (ii)] In a vertically-flued regenerative coke oven each heating-wall is associated with two pairs of superposed sole flues 10, 11, and 10a, 11a running the whole length of the oven and interposed between the heating-wall and the regenerators, the pairs of flues being in communication respectively with two groups of heating-wall flues connected for reversible operation, and each group comprising flues distributed over the length of the heating- wall. In the oven battery shown, in which the complementary chambers 13, 18 and 13a, 18a of the regenerative system are arranged under the two halves of the battery, and in which the heating-flues 2, 3 are connected " hairpin " fashion, each sole flue 10, 10a is connected through a port 12 with an regenerator 13, 13a which can be used for preheating either air or lean gas, while the flues 11, 11a are connected to the remaining regenerators 18, 18a adapted for preheating air only, the connections being such that the air heating regenerators 18, 18a at one side of the battery correspond in position with the gas regenerators 13, 13a at the other side. Vertical passages 23, 23a, 26, 26a in the partition walls between the heating-flues lead from the sole flues 10, 10a, 11, 11a, and open at a number of levels into the heating-flues, the arrangement being such that of each two adjacent flues in the heating-wall, one is connected to the flues 10, 11 and the other to the flues 10a, 11a. Rich gas is supplied to the flues through passages 5, 6 and burner nozzles 7.
