Abstract

213,878. Paxton, C. M. April 7, 1923, [Convention date]. Lubricating; resistance to propulsion, reducing. - Water jet propulsion for ships comprises high velocity jets which in addition to the nozzle reaction are disposed in relation to the hull to induce surrounding water flow and tend to create a reduced pressure on the forward part of the hull and an increased pressure aft and thus assist propulsion. The orifice 6 of the nozzle 1 is a deep narrow slot parallel to the hull 2 directed slightly downwardly and outwardly at an angle of 14‹ and placed between onefifth to one-third of the length of the ship from the bow. The portion 6 may be detachable from the nozzle 1, and the slot form may be replaced by a vertical row of small circular orifices. The nozzle is carried by a plate 4 secured to the hull 2 and receives its supply at 3 from a centrifugal or other pump driven by a turbine or other prime mover. The intake is placed aft of the nozzles and at the keel line. Two or more sets of jets placed near each other may be employed, and another jet may be placed amidships. A screw propeller may be used in combination with the jets. A common header for the port and starboard nozzles mav be used when the cross section of the ship at the nozzle position is sufficiently small.
