Abstract
739,771. Propelling and manoeuvring vessels. EMILSON, R., and TORGARDH, A. V. May 13, 1954, No. 14107/54. Classes' 113 (2) and 114. In a vessel with propulsion means comprising a water inlet 22 in the underside of the vessel, a pump 25 situated above and aft of the inlet, a suction pipe leading from the inlet to the pump, a water outlet 23 aft of the pump and a pressure pipe leading from the pump to the outlet, the bottom of the vessel is stepped at 32 upwardly towards the stern along a line located forward of the water inlet. The underside may be stepped along two or more lines, each of which may be straight or in the form of a shallow V with the apex pointing forwards. The upper wall of the forward end of the suction pipe is inclined at less than 35 degrees to the bottom of the vessel so that the water force upon it causes the vessel to skim along the surface of the water at high speeds. A reversing valve 62 controls the supply of water to additional outlets 74, 76 for running astern, and a valve 63 controls the supply to additional outlets 71, 72 for steering the vessel. The water pumped from the inlets and delivered to the outlets may be used to cool the condensers in a ship propelled mainly by screws driven by steam turbines.
