Abstract

Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by water jets.-In water jet propulsion apparatus, the jet is forced from a ring of nozzles each consisting of a tube or channel, the axis of which lies on a conical surface. The ring of nozzles is corried directly by the pump which has a casing so shaped as to produce an easy flow to the nozzles. An after fairing 1 has a flange with openings 3 adapted to receive the converging nozzles 4. The outer ends of the nozzles lie in a plane perpendicular to the axis, and may have a number of internal ribs. The pump casing 5 is screwed to the flange 2, is open and its forward end except for arms 6 which carry the bearing 7 of the pump shaft 8. The pump rotor 10 has a number of blades 11 which directs the water to the apertures 3. The apparatus may be mounted outside the hull of a ship, the driving shaft 8 extending through a stuffing box in the stern, or may be mounted inside with only the nozles projecting, in which case the front of the pump is connected by pipes with an intake opening in the bottom of the ship. A rudder fitted in the rear of the jets is adapted to be placed athwartships for propulsion astern.
