Actuating pumps by foot power; oscillating- cylindcr pumps. - In a foot-actuated tyre &c. pump, the reciprocating member is connected by pivoted links to the base plate, to which the pump is pivotally secured, and to the pedal, which is connected by tension members to the further end of the pump barrel. As shown, the barrel is pivoted to lugs 15 on the base-plate, while at the other end, a member 20 screwed into the hollow piston-rod and two pairs of toggle links 5, 8 are pivoted on a pin 21, the outer ends of the links being pivoted to the pedal 9 and to lugs 17 on the base-plate. Steel straps 10 connect the pedal to ears on the pump barrel. The return stroke is effected by a volute spring 12, air entering past a cup leather 39 on the piston, which is cushioned by a weak spring 45. The screwed connexion between the member 20 and the pistonrod enables clearance to be adjusted. To facilitate packing, the pedal is provided with a hook 46 engaging a stirrup 47 on the base-plate.
