Abstract

A resistor having a negative temperature coefficient of resistance comprises SiC granules bonded by Si 3 N 4 . The Si 3 N 4 may be present on its own or may be combined with silicon oxynitride. The resistor is preferably in the form of a thin U-shaped body and may be used as an incandescent flame igniter or a flame sensor. In the former application the resistor is placed in a fuel stream while an alternating current is passed through it to produce incandescence. In the latter application the resistor is maintained in a flame, the change in resistance when the flame is extinguished causing the current flowing to be insufficient to retain open a magnetic valve 12 which closes the fuel supply, the valve being controlled also by a switch 15 or opened manually by means of a member 17.
