The novel "Time Shelter/Zaman Sığınağı" by Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, published in Bulgarian in 2020 and translated into Turkish in 2022, is, in my opinion, a work worthy of being the book of 2022. The novel presents the anxieties, troubles, and peculiarities of the world we live in within a dystopian atmosphere. Similar to George Orwell's iconic dystopian novel "1984," Gospodinov'sTime Shelter narrates the formation of an authoritarian/ totalitarian world:

"This is a timely new edition of a landmark in the scholarship of displacement. Not only an incisive and detailed study of the enduring consequences of forced migration, it highlights the resilience of refugees while never discounting their pain. This article is on the diplomatic processes leading to the decision to exchange populations between Greece and Turkey during the peace negotiations at the Lausanne Conference in 1923. The US National Archives has rich and hitherto unexploited archival material that encompasses the correspondence between Istanbul, Athens and the US Department of State. As the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Archives is still closed to researchers, US diplomatic correspondence gives a clear picture of how Greek and Turkish statesmen, as well as intermediaries such as the representatives of the League of Nations, developed and accomplished the idea of population exchange in 1922-23.

There have been a number of milestones in the (re-)writing of the history of the Gallipoli campaign (1915). First, the dominant Turkish nationalist historiography 'Turkified' the victory of the Ottoman Imperial Army. Narratives of the 1930s were also constructed in such a way that the presence of Mustafa Kemal (later Atatü rk) was used as a bridge to attach the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 to the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922). In later years, Islamist poets such as Mehmet Akif wrote poems presenting the campaign as a kind of 'Resistance of Islam against the Infidel'. However, it was not until the mid-1990s that the Gallipoli campaign came to be framed as an 'Invasion of Crusaders into the House of Islam'. This new narrative reflects a jihadist revision. In this article, these trends will be analysed within the framework of operations of political power in both civil society and the state.

Sarkis Torossian, an Ottoman Armenian, was an officer in the Ottoman army who fought on different fronts during the First World War. Because of his courage and success during the Gallipoli War, his military rank was raised and he was awarded a medal with an accompanying letter, signed by Enver Pasha himself. After learning that his family had been deported and exterminated during the genocide, Torossian switched sides and fought against the Turkish army. After 1920, he settled in the US where he published his memoirs in 1947. The translation of his memoirs into Turkish in 2012 has launched a heated debate. That an Armenian soldier was on active duty in Gallipoli, which has a crucial symbolic value for Turkish national identity, was unacceptable. His memoirs represent a total discrediting of the Turkish historical narrative on Armenians and the Armenian Genocide. Hence, some scholars have questioned its authenticity, denouncing him a charlatan and his memoirs as fiction. Others believe in the memoirs' authenticity despite the few errors and exaggerations, which are normal in such documents. This article argues that the debate is about the relationship between history, truth and memoirs.

The history of the Gallipoli campaign has been contested in Turkey for many decades. The commemorations of the Ottoman naval victory of 18 March point to Staff Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk) as ‘the only man, the only commanding officer’. Yet, this official narrative contradicts Atatürk’s own almost contemporary version, where his role was minimal on that day. On the other hand, Mustafa Kemal later tried, for political and career reasons, to highlight his role in the land operations commencing 25 April. While he was fairly unsuccessful in his efforts to appoint himself to a decision-making position within the Young Turk regime, historians on the Allied side (Bean, Churchill and General Aspinall-Oglander), turned him into ‘the Man of Destiny’. The myth grew in the turbulent international relations of the early 1930s and has been consolidated since.

Yaşam 'İktidarın her içki içene alkolik deyip, yasak koyması bonzaiyi patlattı' Prof. Ayhan Aktar, son dönemde artan bonzai vakalarını alkolden alınan vergilerin artılmasına bağladı 14 Eylül 2014 12:02 İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi öğretim üyesi Prof. Dr. Ayhan Aktar, " İktidarın her içki içene alkolik damgası vurup, yasak koyması bonzaiyi patlattı " dedi. Dünyanın her yerinde orta sınıYar ehli keyiftir.

The Annual Kalamata Conference of 2023 is devoted to the resonance of the Treaty of Lausanne, a momentous international contract negotiated, signed and ratified by almost all the participants of the First World War, with ongoing implications in the larger Eastern Mediterranean region today. The aim of the organizing committee is to serve as a platform for the comprehensive presentation and discussion of the ways that this Convention shaped the political contours and conflicts, both internally and internationally, in the countries of the Near and Middle East. To what extent are we still living in a “Lausanne world” today and in which ways is the Convention a matter of the past? These questions hold for the political, diplomatic, territorial, legal, military, economic and humanitarian realms.

As the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Archives is still closed to researchers, US diplomatic correspondence gives a clear picture of how Greek and Turkish statesmen, as well as intermediaries such as the representatives of the League of Nations, developed and accomplished the idea of population exchange in 1922–23.

Steven Leonard Jacobs (Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2009), ix. Emphasis added. 2. An interesting exception would be my own contribution, ‘‘Genocidal Religion,’’ Journal of Hate Studies, 9,1 (2010-2011): 221–35. Further, in my edited collection, Confronting Genocide: Judaism, Christianity, Islam (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2011), I made it a point to include Leo Kuper’s 1990 contribution ‘‘Theological Warrants for Genocide: Judaism, Christianity, Islam,’’ and Leonard Glick’s 1994 contribution ‘‘Religion and Genocide,’’ both among the very earliest works to address the topic. It should be noted, however, that Kuper was a sociologist and Glick an anthropologist, neither of whom would claim expertise in the field of religious studies. 3. Copan is Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at Palm Beach Atlanta University, FL, and author of the earlier book Is God a Moral Monster? Making Sense of the Old Testament God, also published by Baker Books in 2011. In that text, Chapters 15, 16, and 17 addresses the question ‘‘Indiscriminate Massacre and Ethnic Cleansing: The Killing of the Canaanites I, II, and III’’ (pages 158–97) and coming largely to the same conclusions. Flannagan is a Teaching Pastor at Takanini Community Church in Auckland, New Zealand. Both hold PhDs from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.

There have been a number of milestones in the (re-)writing of the history of the Gallipoli campaign (1915). First, the dominant Turkish nationalist historiography ‘Turkified’ the victory of the Ottoman Imperial Army. Narratives of the 1930s were also constructed in such a way that the presence of Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk) was used as a bridge to attach the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 to the Turkish War of Independence (1919–1922). In later years, Islamist poets such as Mehmet Akif wrote poems presenting the campaign as a kind of ‘Resistance of Islam against the Infidel’. However, it was not until the mid-1990s that the Gallipoli campaign came to be framed as an ‘Invasion of Crusaders into the House of Islam’. This new narrative reflects a jihadist revision. In this article, these trends will be analysed within the framework of operations of political power in both civil society and the state.

This article traces how differing perspectives on the sinking of the French battleship Bouvet ultimately denied the Ottoman artillery credit for the success. The official British account would attribute the defeat to ‘floating mines’ and to the ‘luck’ of the Turks in March 1915 first, and later to the Nusret’s minefield when they published their official history in 1921. Following the Great War and the occupation of Istanbul, the Ottoman officers who participated in the naval operations revised their own accounts and imported the British official narrative of the event. In understanding this overlooked case using newly disclosed Ottoman and German accounts, we can analyse how the losers’ historiography is vulnerable to overt influence from the victors’ hegemonic official historiography.
