LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 5

Topic: Phases of Economic Development

A. Background Information for Learners

Economic Development is a total process which includes not only economic growth or the
increase in the given amount of goods and services produced by the country’s economy but
also considers the social, political, cultural, and spiritual aspects of the country’s growth.
Although material wealth accumulation is among the concerns of genuine economic
development, its greater concern is the total improvement of the quality of people’s lives.
This, in turn, is related to sustainable economic development issues in a country which
greatly influence business management.
Economic Development Phases are the distinct stages involved in the total process of
economic development in a particular country; these include economic growth,
improvement of Human Development Index, availability of benefits provided by science and
technology, and the societal improvement of the opportunities and general welfare of its
members.

B. Objectives/Learning Targets

1. Discuss the different phases of economic development

C. Detailed Directions/Instructions
After reading and understanding the concepts about the Phases of Economic
Development answer the following questions not less than 5 sentences and write your
answers in your learning activity sheet. Use only black or blue pen.

D. Exercises/Activities

1. Is the term “Economic Development” synonymous with “Economic Growth?” Explain

your answer. (5 pts.)
Yes, because both economic growth and economic development denote
improvement/progress in society’s economy. Economic growth and Economic
Development leads to social, economic and political well-being of the people.

2. What are the phases of Economic Development? Why is it important to understand

the specific steps related to these? (5 pts.)
Economics — like most human endeavors — is always evolving. That’s why, to
understand Economics at all, we must understand the phases of Economic
development. The first distinction is this — there is the Agricultural Stage that is
more than 6,000 years old. Then there is the Industrial Stage, which is less than 300
years old, but which has surpassed the Agricultural Stage with regard to percentage
of the population employed — worldwide. That’s a good example of why, to
understand Economics at all, we must understand the phases of Economic
development.
3. Choose an Asian country and discuss how factors in its economic development differ
from those in the Philippines? (10 pts.)
China, because Despite 19 years of uninterrupted growth, the Philippine economy
was still unable to surpass China's expansion, after the Asian superpower posted a
"surprising" recovery in 2017, from a 26-year low in 2016. In the past 5 quarters, the
Philippines registered higher economic growth than China twice: one in the 4th
quarter of 2016 and another in the 3rd quarter of 2017. But when the latest gross
domestic product (GDP) results were announced, China was still declared as the
fastest-growing economy in Asia, with 6.9% expansion in 2017.

E. Values Integration
Social Responsibility
The learner is able to realize the importance of each individual’s contribution for the
economic development of the country.
