of essay through National artist, F. Sionil Jose’s “Spirit and Literature”.

I. Introduction to Literature of Luzon

Luzon is comprised of seven political regions. Among the three major island groups in the country,
Luzon has the greatest number of political regions. All these regions share the existence of oral lore
and the early forms of literature.
[Please read further on pages 7-8 of the textbook]

II. Background of the Topic

1. What is an essay?
The essay is defined as a short prose composition which expresses the author’s opinions on a particular
subject and considered as one of the oldest types of prose literature. There are mainly two types of
essay: the informal essay and the formal essay.
[please refer to PPT 04. Literature of Luzon]

Please also recall what you have learned about organization and patterns of development in writing.

2. What is analogy?
An analogy is a literary device used to explain or describe something unfamiliar by comparing it to
things that are alike in certain aspects; examples are simile—an expressed comparison, and metaphor—
an implied comparison.
[please refer to page 9 of the Voices textbook]

3. What is a National Artist?

A Filipino citizen who has been given the rank and title of National Artist in recognition of his/her
significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts and letters.

4. Who is F. Sionil Jose?

Widely considered as one of the most well-read Filipino writers in the English language, F. Sionil Jose
is perhaps most well-known for the Rosales Saga. Common themes for his work include colonialism
class struggles in the Philippines.

III. Reading of the Essay
Read “Spirit and Literature” by F. Sionil Jose (found on pages 10-14 of the textbook). While reading
make sure to highlight and look up the meaning of difficult words in the dictionary. Also try to take
note of how the author organizes his ideas in the text.

C. Exercises/Activities:

NOTE: Please be reminded that while you are allowed to read and include ideas, concepts, opinions, and
arguments from books and online sources in your answers. You are also required to properly cite these
sources. Failure to properly acknowledge printed, online, and other sources of information will merit
deduction of points for the activity.

 4.1 Characteristics of an Essay. Review the characteristics of an essay outlined earlier in the lesson
and try to reflect on how these characteristics are present in “Spirit and Literature”. After this, answer
the following questions in no more than five sentences each question.

1. Is the essay formal or informal? How so?

The essay is formal because he wrote down all of his experiences while traveling to the locations
mentioned in the article and detailing what he encountered along the way. He also told the readers
about the traditions and cultures of the people who lived there.

2. What is the subject of the essay? How would you classify this subject (familiar or personal,
descriptive, informative, biographical, editorial, critical, or reflective) and why?
The subject of the essay is a Descriptive essay since he talked about all of his encounters and
experiences in that specific location. Explaining it well, outlining the place he visited and what he
did there.

3. Is the dominant mood of the essay humorous? Fantastic? Sportive? Seriously thoughtful?
Reverent? Speculative? Mildly satirical?
Fantastic is the essay's main mood since it was a pleasure to read and it is appealing. Telling us that
superstitions are real and that he has personally experienced them.

 4.2 What is the author trying to say? Briefly discuss your answers to the following guide questions in
no more than five sentences per question.

1. What makes the author’s experiences undeniably “Filipino”?

Max Soliven's experience led him to a faith healer in Pasig. Max had high cholesterol and had
diabetic problems that he needed to get rid of. Max was healed when it was his turn, and this is
where the author's experience became clearly "Filipino."

2. How do these experiences help the writer?

The writer's experiences aided him in writing the essay to share what he learned while traveling to
new locations and experiencing new things. He was inspired to write down his story and distribute it
around the world, as well as how he was healed by a faith doctor so that others with similar
difficulties can learn from his experience and seek healing from a faith doctor. Without life, it would
be difficult to understand how relationships work, how dialogues form, how descriptions enhance a
location or scene, and the use of conventions to make the writing fluid.

3. According to the author, how can one experience the “pleasures” of literature?
The pleasure of seeing through literature is knowing how poetry or stories try to manipulate our
emotions and influence our knowledge and moral judgments in ways we may or may not be willing
to accept. Recognizing forms and genres, as well as discovering parallels across works of literature,
is a pleasure.

 4.3 The textbook defines analogy as a literary device used to explain or describe something unfamiliar
through comparison. After reading the essay and seeing how F. Sionil Jose uses the mystical
experience as an analogy for the literary experience, think of your own analogy for the literary
experience. Explain your answer in no less than one paragraph and no more than three paragraphs.

“Life is like the wind while you ride a bicycle, on one stretch it can be your best friend, pushing you
forward. But as soon as you turn the corner it can be your worst enemy, making you stumble and
pushing you down. Which is why you must always strive for the next corner because it will come
eventually”. Why is this my analogy? Because we will never know what has gone up and what has
gone down in our lives, and we will never know what will happen in the future, whether it will be
good or bad. That is why we strive in life because we never know what will happen.

D. Values Integration:
Excellence, Discipline, and Nationalism
Through this lesson the students will start developing interest and appreciation for Philippine literature
starting with contemporary pieces from Luzon. They will also begin to explore different genres and
forms of literature as well as their corresponding characteristics. Lastly, they will develop analysis and
critical thinking by examining and evaluating the literary piece for it formal and aesthetic qualities.
