A three-and-half-year-old girl was waking every night, and her tired parents brought her to

whit.
When asked why she woke, she was in no doubt. “It’s the thunder.” “But there’s been no
thunder for months,” I replied. “It’s the ships in the harbor tooting their horns.” “But you don’t live
near the harbor.” “A man comes in and wakes me. Anyway, I can’t sleep with all the horses galloping
up and down.” We eventually sorted out his sleep problem, but it was hard to be tough on a little
person with such an engaging imagination.

LOUIS PASTEUR (1822-1895)

CONQUEROR OF DISEASE
On the field of battle in one of his campaigns, Napoleon decorated for bravery a certain tanner
named Pasteur. This brave soldier had an equally brave son, Louis Pasteur, born seven years after
Waterloo. He was not a soldier, but he was a fighter. He fought disease. He devoted his life to the study of
what we sometimes call germs or microbes which men of science call bacteria, a Greek word meaning
“little rods”. Bacteria are vegetable organisms which exist in the air, water and soil, and in the bodies of
animals and plants; some but not all are the causes of diseases, some convert matter into food for plants.
Louis Pasteur had a very busy and interesting life. He not only made some exciting discoveries
about germs but the was able to use his discoveries very practical ways. He worked hard in his laboratory
with test tubes and all kinds of experiments, but nearly all the time he was working to help people who
were suffering in some special way from disease. Among the people whom Pasteur was able to help were

Stout evidence solves bubble mystery
Australian scientists say they have answered a question that has plagued and entertained drinkers
for generations : why do the bubbles in a glass of Guinness appear to fall to the bottom?
They said computer simulation had settled the issue, and perhaps saved many a pint being
sacrificed in the name of science.
Clive Fletcher and his students at the University of New South Wales in Sydney found that most
bubbles in a pint of the creamy stout do indeed rise, as bubbles should.
But the liquid carrying these-bubbles has nowhere to go once it reaches the top, so it flows back
down the sides of the glass, taking smaller bubbles with it. Bubbles larger than 0.05 millimetres are able
to resist.

Prix alone in a suburban Toronto parking lot. His mother had been apprehended early in the evening for
allegedly stealing clothes from a large department store. “She never once mentioned that there was a child
