THE LITTLE BOY WHO COULD (from Newsweek)
Rocky Lyons never tired of hearing about "The Little Engine That Could". Last Halloween
his parents knew that how much the story meant to him, and to them. Rocky's dad, Marty Lyons,
was playing football for the New York Jets. His mom, Kelly, was driving home through Alabama
with five-year-old Rocky, asleep beside her. Suddenly, their pickup truck hit a large hole in the
road and fell down a hill to the bottom of a forty-foot of a steep valley. “I had blood all over
my face and in my eyes, and I thought I was blind,” Mrs. Lyons recalls. I told "Rocky to get away
because I thought the truck might explode."
The boy obeyed - and then ran back to try to pull her from the wrecked car. "Come on,
Mom. I can help you get up the hill. I can push," he said. All of 4 feet and 2 inches and 55 pounds,
Rocky began to push his mother up the slope. "Gosh Mom, you weigh a thousand pounds," he
said. Even in pain, Mrs. Lyons had to smile at that. But halfway up the hill, she told her son she
could go no farther. “Oh, Mom, think of the little train: I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.
That's what it said," he insisted. They started up again. Finally, they crawled to the highway, where
a passing car took them to the hospital. Rocky's mother had two broken shoulders and needed
70 stitches to close the wounds on her face. Without her son's perseverance, she's sure she would
have bled to death.

25. In the past, people used to sit together in a living room or go to their friends' houses to watch
sport; from international events such as the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup to a local football match
on a local TV channel. They used to sit in the living room, eat snacks and watch the game together.
Now with the internet, people from London to India to Bangkok can watch sports events from all
over the world easily on their smartphones and other devices. They can watch a greater variety of
events, too. For some people, getting together with friends for a game is a bit harder because
everyone's so busy, so it's much easier to watch it in your own time. It's a pity. We should make the
effort to carry on the old tradition of watching the game with friends at home.
You can infer from the passage that ___________.
1) people today prefer online events to the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup

our secrets. But what about casual friends? They are the friends we see only now and then. They are

more casual friends we have, the better our lives would be. First, casual friends make us happy. We
feel like we are not alone. Second, they connect us to other groups of people. Finally, they even
introduce us to a variety of new ideas. Our best friends often think like us but they may have different
ideas.
The main idea from the passage is ___________.

2) casual friends improve our lives in several ways
3) it is harder to find best friends than casual friends
4) talk more to strangers to make more casual friends
