Passage 1
Are there any harmful effects from microwave cooking?
Two areas of concern have been raised about microwave ovens over the year. The first is
whether they produce harmful radiolytic compounds in food. The type ofradiation used in
microwave ovens is not the ionizing radiation (such as X-rays andgamma rays) that cause
molecular bonds to break and create radiolytic compounds.Microwave radiation doesn’t break
molecular bonds, it stretches them.
The second area of concern is the possibility of radiation leakage from the unit.Owners can
maintain low leakage by keeping their unit in good working order and notabusing it. This means
not allowing dirt to accumulate around the door seals, not damaging the door or door seals,
and always replacing or repairing worn-out door hinges and latches.

Passage 2
The popularity of polyester pillows and of canned and instant coconut milk has hurt business
in a village renowned for raising monkeys to collect fruit and coconuts.
Residents of Khok Sida village in Phon Thong district have been forced to sell more than 100
"unemployed" monkeys.
Village headman Saman Silthusang, 56, said many villagers had sold their monkeys because
they could no longer afford the Bt 40-50 for their fruit meals because there was less demand for
their services - collecting coconuts, betel nuts and kapok - seed pods containing a cotton-like fibre
that is used to stuff pillows and mattress.
Khok Sida had been well-known for its trained monkeys, but now only 26 remained, he said.
Saman said most monkeys sold for between Bt 10,000 and 13,000, depending on their skills.
Most buyers were seeking to replace other trained monkeys that were getting too old to collect fruit
in the Northeast and South.
Saman expressed concern that the village could not maintain its monkey-raising tradition,

Passage 4
Internet banking is gaining ground. Banks increasingly operate websites through which
customers are able not only to inquire about account balances and interest and exchange rates
but also to conduct a range of transactions. Unfortunately, data on Internet banking is scarce, and
differences in definitions make cross-country comparisons difficult.
Even so, one finds that Internet banking is particularly widespread in Austria, Korea, the
Scandinavian countries, Singapore, Spain, and Switzerland, where more than 75 percent of all
banks offer Internet banking services. The Scandinavian countries have the largest number of
Internet users, with up to one-third of bank customers in Finland and Sweden taking advantage of
e-banking.
In the United States, Internet banking is still concentrated in the largest banks. In mid-2001,
44 percent of national banks maintained transactional websites almost double the number in the
third quarter of 1999. These banks account for over 90 percent of national banking system assets.
The large banks tend to offer a wider array of electronic banking services, including loan
applications and brokerage services.
While most U.S. consumers have accounts with banks that offer Internet services, only
about 6 percent of them use these services.

Passage 5
People who suffer from excessive drowsiness during the daytime may be victims of a
condition known as "narcolepsy." Although most people may feel sleepy while watching TV or after
eating a meal, narcoleptics may fall asleep at unusual or embarrassing times. They may doze
while eating, talking, taking a shower, or even driving a car.
Victims can be affected in one of two ways. Most narcoleptics have several sleeping
periods during each day with alert periods in between. Minorities of others feels drowsy almost all
the time and are alert for only brief intervals. Many people with this condition also suffer from
cataplexy — a form of muscular paralysis that can range from a mild weakness at the knees to
complete immobility affecting the entire body.
This condition lasts from a few seconds to several minutes and is often set off by
intense emotions. No reliable data exist showing how many people have narcolepsy. Some
estimates put the number as high as three hundred thousand in the United States alone.
Researchers suggest that the problem may stem from the immune system's reacting abnormally to
the brain's chemical processes.
Further studies have shown a link between narcolepsy and a number of genes, although it
is quite possible for an individual to have these genes and not develop the disease. There are also
cases of twins where one member has narcolepsy but the other does not. Thus, an explanation
based on genetics alone is not adequate.
There is currently no cure for narcolepsy, so sufferers of this condition can only
have their symptoms treated through a combination of counseling and drugs. The available drugs
can help control the worst of the symptoms, but their administration has unwanted side effects
such as increased blood pressure and heart rate and, sometimes, even increased sleepiness. It is
clear that improved medications need to be developed.
23. A person is most likely to be narcoleptic if he or she falls asleep while _____.
(1) lying on a beach
(2) eating at a restaurant
(3) watching a movie
(4) taking a long airplane trip
24. The word “their” (line 20) in the last paragraph refers to _____.
(1) symptoms of narcolepsy
(2) available drugs
(3) sufferers of this condition
(4) counseling and drugs
25. Which of the following statements bout narcolepsy is NOT true?
(1) Doctors treat symptoms rather than causes.
(2) Possible causes of narcolepsy have not been found yet.
(3) Narcolepsy affects people in two basic ways.
(4) Narcolepsy can be cured through counseling and drugs.
Passage 6
As the population booms, we can expect that the food insecurity challenge will only
intensify. Rising demand for food plus shrinking agricultural production is a formula for continued
hunger and poverty, and a problem that requires ingenuity and innovative solutions. Increasingly,
we see climate-smart agriculture (CSA) as an approach that can help change the equation.
Very simply, climate-smart agriculture aims to produce more food on less land, and with a
minimal environmental footprint. This principle needs to be applied across landscapes—crops,
livestock, forests, and fisheries—to be effective. Guided by this approach, we are working with
farmers in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Vietnam to implement productive, climate-resilient agriculture
ecosystems that also help mitigate climate change by reducing emissions and potentially capturing
carbon.
This is especially important, because aside from being the sector that’s most vulnerable to
climate change, agriculture is also a major cause. Research finds that agriculture, together with the
deforestation associated with land conversion, accounts for about 30 percent of greenhouse gas
emissions. Scaling up agricultural productivity in a way that mitigates climate change and allows
more people to be fed could be transformative.

The Vscan is a pocket-sized ultrasound scanner that can be taken anywhere. It improves
medical care, says Dr Jose Zmaorano, director of the Cardio-vascular Institute at the University
Clinic San Carlos, Madrid. He carries the scanner between the echocardiography lab, outpatient
clinic, coronary care unit and emergency department of his hospital.
“If I detect a major problem, I will send the patient straight to the echo lab,” says
Zamorano. When he looked at the benefits of using Vscan in outpatient cardiology, he found that
about one in four patients wouldn’t have received a full echocardiogram exam were it not for the
problems picked up in an early Vscan check. “Generally, we may miss diagnosis for only 20% of
the patients.”

Aqua therapy is the best alternative for certain types of patients who cannot withstand other
types of physical therapies; aqua therapy can provide distinct advantages. Aqua therapy motivates
individuals to choose swimming or water exercise as a lifetime sport for maintaining general health
and fitness. Often traditional physical therapy is delayed because patients cannot tolerate weight-
bearing activities of daily living in the shortest time period possible.
Using aqua therapy as a high velocity work out can help build muscle endurance and
strength, cardiovascular health, coordination and endurance. Resistance in water is 5 to 45 times
greater than resistance in air, depending on the speed of movement. This fact makes water a
natural and immediately adaptable weigh training mechanism. The unique properties of water
enable the heart to work more efficiently, thus enabling one to maintain a lower blood pressure and
better circulation of blood.

Passage 9
Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, is scrambling to fend off flood waters bearing down on the city.
Unusually heavy rains have caused the worst flooding in decades across Southeast Asia, killing
some 500 people, destroying crops and flooding homes and factories.
The Thai capital Thursday reinforced dikes holding off floodwaters that have ravaged central
and northern parts of the country.
Bangkok is preparing for high water expected this weekend as run-off from those floods
reaches the city just as seas in the Gulf of Thailand reach high tide.
Sean Boonpracong, international spokesman for Bangkok’s flood relief center, acknowledges
that flooding in the capital is a possibility but says authorities are doing all they can to prevent it. “I
think there is a small risk of flooding in the outer area,” said Boonpracong. “But, for now I believe it
is manageable. There has been a new operation to relieve the water. Authorities are dredging canals
in Bangkok’s Chao Phraya and other rivers so more water can reach the sea faster.”
41. Which parts of Thailand have already been flooded according to the news?
(1) the northern and eastern parts
(2) the northern and central parts
(3) the central and eastern parts
(4) the whole country

Passage 10
Must we protect our children from this evil? Psychologists are concerned about how children’s
behavior has changed over the last three years. They become less social, less attentive.
Neuroscientist Susan Greenfield (2009) claims that social networks, especially Facebook, infantilize
our brain, training it to have a poor attention span.
According to her point of view, we must consider an assumption, that socializing in front of
a computer screen can increase chances of autism (mental insanity; inability to communicate with
people). Networking can’t teach our children real life communication.
Since there are no grammar rules on Facebook, some teachers start to complain that
teenagers and children have more and more problems with their grammar and spelling. It is
due to frequently use of “Chat language”, for example: lol, g2g, bb, cya, bbq, msg, etc. Student use
these parasite word in their essays, which leads to lower grades.

A study conducted by the Netherlands’ Open University (2009) has proven that those
students who use Facebook tend to have lower grades then those who don’t use it.
They used 219 students at an American University; at the end of the task, those who don’t
use Facebook had a 3.82 GPA (Grade point Average), and other, who use it, had a GPA of 3.06,
which is significantly lower.

Passage 11
When it comes to cancer prevention, choices are not only limited to chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, operation and so forth. According to Dr Somboon Kietinun, the use of herbs has become
one of the most effective mode of alternative care for the malignant disease.
No matter what type of cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and so on, most
cases have been attended far too late, resulting in the disease becoming untreatable. Worse, many
of the cancer patients who are under medical care develop complications and unwanted s and
unwanted side effects from conventional medicines while the cost of treatments is in many cases
unaffordable.
As a result, Dr Somboon recommended herbs to be used as a preventative approach against
cancer. Many types of herbs are proven to contain anti-cancer and antioxidant agents. Herbs are
apparently cheaper and less toxic than chemicals. Herbs can be grown in back gardens and involve
no huge financial demand and, more importantly, no chemical-related processing before use.
Passage 12
A sharp reduction in the Irrawaddy dolphin population in Songkhla Lake is worrying marine
experts. Santi Nilawat of the Marine and Coastal Research Centre said yesterday at least 81 dolphins
had died over the past 20 years, with 10 dying between January and September this year.
The major cause of death is dolphin becoming entangled in fishing nets, he said. The latest
survey found there were about 30 dolphins living in the lake.
Mr. Santi called on fishermen to be careful when fishing in the lake from this month to January
as it was the gestation period for female dolphins.
Dolphins need larger feeding grounds during this period, so they stray from the 100 square
kilometers declared an Irrawaddy dolphin protection zone to search for food. This increases the risk
of being entangled in fishing nets, he said.
56. A sharp reduction in the Irrawaddy dolphin population means ________.
(1) dolphins were killed by sharp weapons
(2) fishermen used knives to kill dolphins in the lake
(3) the study of dolphins was done sharply
(4) the number of dolphins decreased very quickly
57. What is believed to be the cause of this tragedy?
(1) The method of fishing
(2) The life of fishermen
(3) The health of dolphins
(4) The condition of the lake
