Brisbane is now suffering a devasting plague. Is it an outbreak, crime, or corruption?
No, toads. The huge, ugly and poisonous cane toads have caused great problems for
Brisbane, the third largest city of Australia. The toad population has been increasing sharply
in Brisbane, as female cane toads can produce as many as 40,000 eggs at a time. Not only
do the amphibians pose a threat to Australia’s ecology, they do have glands that produce
bufotenine, a toxic substance that can kill dogs, cats, and even human babies. In order to
cope with the problem, thousands of Brisbanites are volunteering for an “eradication night”
to get rid of the invaders.
The problem arose in 1932, when Australia imported approximately 100 cane toads
from Latin America, trying to use the toads to control beetles, which were attacking sugar
crops. However, the tactic had apparently done more harm than good. Another big problem

occurred when the number of toads suddenly multiplied and spread all over Queensland
and northern New South Wales. Mark Lewis, a producer of a documentary on toads,
revealed that it was a monstrous mistake the Australian government had made.
In order to get rid of the invading amphibians, Brisbane is carefully running the
eradication campaign. A four-page color brochure called 101 Ways to Kill a Cane are given
to prepare citizens to kill the huge toads. Greg Stegman, an organizer of the Cane Toad
Eradication Campaign, suggests using Dettol, a disinfectant, to eradicate the toads.
Nevertheless, some people also suggest another less painful way: putting the toads in the
freezer to kill them humanely.
