Ratzel, Friedrich (1844-1904), German geographer and a founder of modern
political geography, the study of the influence of environment on politics. Ratzel was
first a journalist travelling in Europe (1869) and then in Cuba, Mexico, and the United
States (1872-1875). In 1886 he became Professor of Geography at the University of
Leipzig. His Anthropogeographie (2 vols., 1882-1891) and Politische Geographie
(1897) stress the determining power of the physical environment in conditioning
human activity.

Vidal de la Blache, Paul (1845-1918), French geographer, who stressed the effects
of geography on history and is regarded as the main pioneer of human geography in
France. His best-known work is Tableau de la Géographie de la France, first
published in 1903 as an introduction to a history of France by Ernest Lavisse and later
published separately. Educated at the École Normale Supérieure, Vidal de la Blache
taught at Nancy and Paris, where he founded the periodical Annales de Géographie
(1891), which he subsequently edited for many years; in 1894 he published the Atlas
Général: Histoire et Géographie. His most innovative works, Principes de la
Géographie Humane (1923; Principles of Human Geography, 1926), and the 15-
volume Géographie Universelle (1927-1948, co-edited and completed by Lucien
Gallois), were published posthumously.

Semple, Ellen Churchill (1863-1932), American geographer best known as one of
the leading exponents of environmental determinism, a school of geographical
thought that was highly influential during the first three decades of the 20th century.
Ultimately derived from Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, environmental
determinism was based on the view that the natural environment is the main

determinant of the way in which human societies develop. In other words, the social
and cultural life, temperament, religion, and economic practices of people in a
particular area are all the result of the influence of their physical surroundings.
4 Huntington, Ellsworth (1876-1947), American geographer, explorer, and author,
whose work focused on the effects of climate on human heredity and civilization.
Born in Galesburg, Illinois, he was an instructor at Euphrates College in Turkey from
1897 to 1901, the year in which he explored the canyons of the Euphrates River.
Between 1903 and 1906 he travelled extensively in Central Asia. In 1907, Huntington
began teaching at Yale University and published The Pulse of Asia, in which he
advanced the idea that Mongol and Manchu migrations were caused by climatic
change. As a research associate of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, D. C.,
Huntington participated in an expedition to Palestine (1909) and in a series of studies
(1910-1913) on climate in the United States, Mexico, and Central America. In 1917
he became research associate in geography at Yale and, until his retirement in 1945,
concentrated on cultural geography and climatic studies.
