"Narrator January LaVoy's range is highlighted in this audiobook about a single summer on Fire Island when gossip among vacationers and townies is ratcheted up to new levels."- AudioFile
Emma Rosenblum's Bad Summer People is a whip-smart, propulsive debut about infidelity, backstabbing, and murderous intrigue, set against an exclusive summer haven on Fire Island.
"This roiling beach community satire serves up wicked, clever fun that is White Lotus sharp." —Kevin Kwan, New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Rich Asians and Sex and Vanity
None of them would claim to be a particularly good person. But who among them is actually capable of murder?
Jen Weinstein and Lauren Parker rule the town of Salcombe, Fire Island every summer. They hold sway on the beach and the tennis court, and are adept at manipulating people to get what they want. Their husbands, Sam and Jason, have summered together on the island since childhood, despite lifelong grudges and numerous secrets. Their one single friend, Rachel Woolf, is looking to meet her match, whether he’s the tennis pro—or someone else’s husband. But even with plenty to gossip about, this season starts out as quietly as any other.
Until a body is discovered, face down, off the side of the boardwalk.
Stylish, subversive, and darkly comedic, this is a story of what's lurking under the surface of picture-perfect lives in a place where everyone has something to hide.
A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some reviewers found the plot and characters unlikable and the writing style boring. However, others enjoyed the interesting storyline, great narration, and the desire to visit the island described in the book. Overall, the book received mixed reviews, but it may be worth a read for those who enjoy drama stories about rich people.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Jun 18, 2024 3.5 stars. It was good but the tone of contempt about "old people" 60+ was unpleasant for this woman approaching her 7th decade. If oldsters are expected to empathethize with youngsters, a reciprocal respect is reasonable to expect. I did struggle to diffentiate several of the characters. The mystery was good though not surprising. A remarkably negative perspective on the middle aged, upper middle class New Yorker. And one character's idea to go to Jordan instead of Madrid for the summer and take civil rights education, did not make his decision to stay silent righteous. Stealing from the richer because they are bores who won't miss the money is also not ethical. Not sure what this author's message is, if any.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Sep 26, 2023 This was not what I was hoping for. If you like drama stories about rich people with no real plot or likable characters, you may enjoy this. I really wanted to DNF but finished the second half on audio. I was bored and annoyed by all the excessive points of view, I did not care for the writing style and the book went on for way too long. One thing I do like is the cover.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 26, 2023 Story was good and narration was good. The problem I had was that there was not one single nice, sympathetic person in this fairly large cast of characters. Any one of them could have been the victim I truly disliked them all. So this book was a no from me!1 person found this helpful
