This book is the first worldwide handbook of Portuguese Technical Translation. It covers theoretical texts on writing, translating and creating terminological neologisms; it also covers practical subjects in technical translation, such as internationalization, localization, and project management, CAT tools, QA issues, checklists, and international standards. Translation of numerous sign languages into words or sentences in helping the hearing-impaired persons to communicate is the main concern of this research through the design and development of a system application for them. The advanced and high-tech sign language translator application aims to educate common individuals to learn and familiarize the basic sign language translations to help them communicate with the deaf and mute person. The Sign Language Translator can also be able to facilitate different style of communication through the use of voice recognition, hand signal and hand gestures. The voice recognition tool serves as a remedial function for deaf and mute persons and common individuals with difficulties in using sign language. This application can interpret hand signals and gestures and translate it to text, voice or gesture through the use of Microsoft Kinect for Windows technology. Implementing hand signals, gestures and sign language with the Kinect technology will result as a big help to the hearing-impaired community, mute and common individuals to communicate with each other's.

The aim of this study was to discover the prevailing strategies of translating taboos in the 1390s/~2010s. To this end, four Persian translations of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, published in the mentioned decade, were investigated. However, to make a comparison between strategies of translating taboo words and expressions in the 1390s/~2010s and the pre-Islamic Revolution era, the only translation of the novel published before the Islamic Revolution was also examined. This study adopted a mixed theoretical framework, one to detect the taboo items and the other to analyse the collected taboos with respect to the translation strategies. To carry out the research, first, the taboo items of the source text were extracted. Then the 124 taboos extracted from the source text were compared to their Persian counterparts with respect to translation strategies. Findings of the study showed great diversity regarding the adopted strategies, possibly highlighting the role of translators’ personal decisions, rather than norm-based decisions, in translating taboo items.

Localization can be defined as the process of modifying a website or software in order to facilitate its use for target receivers. The proliferation of e-commerce has contributed to the development of a major professional industry in the field of website localization. Still, there is not any agreed definition or use for the concept of localization either in the scholarly literature or in the industry’s discourse. The aim of this study is to question how the concept is perceived and defined in the field of social sciences, as well as in the translation and localization industry, particularly in Turkey, and to investigate and describe the projections on its relationship with translation. Afterwards, the position of the translator as an agent in website localization processes in Turkey is explored. Two methods were used to collect data in this qualitative study: document review and interview. The former is used in the investigation of the concept of localization and its relationship with translation. The corpus includes literature from various fields, including translation studies, marketing, business administration and international trade, as well as websites of translation and localization companies, publications of the Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA), an organization which no longer exists, and books and publications by various industry agents. The interview method has provided data both for conceptual discussion and for the investigation of the translator’s position in website localization processes in Turkey. The interview method was applied through completion of interview forms. In determining the corpus of interviews, maximum variation sampling was used as the purposeful sampling method. As a common attribute, all of the interviewees took part in website localization processes as agents in various positions. Since the research approach was qualitative and the aim was to analyze the data in depth, the number of interviewees in the corpus was limited to nine. The interviews were held in Istanbul between September 2011 and February 2012. The conceptual and theoretical framework of the study comprises functional translation approaches, particularly the theories offered by Justa Holz-Mänttäri and Hans Vermeer, while the agency theory is used as a complementary approach.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, sosyal bilimler literatüründe ve daha çok Türkiye özeline inerek çeviri ve yerelleştirme endüstrisinde kavramın nasıl algılandığını, içeriğinin nasıl doldurulduğunu sorgulamak ve çeviri ile ilişkisinin nasıl tasarlandığını araştırıp durumu betimlemektir. Buradan hareketle, Türkiye’de web sitesi yerelleştirmelerinde bir eyleyen olarak çevirmenin nasıl bir konumda olduğu sorgulanmıştır. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımının benimsendiği bu çalışmada, veri toplamak için iki yönteme başvurulmuştur. Bunlardan biri doküman inceleme diğeri ise görüşmedir. Doküman inceleme yöntemine yerelleştirme kavramı ve çeviri ile ilişkisi konusundaki araştırmada başvurulmuştur. Görüşmeler Eylül 2011-Şubat 2012 döneminde İstanbul’da gerçekleştirilmiştir. Even though contemporary Finnish literary translators are very dissatisfied with the pay they receive from their work, they are very satisfied with their working conditions in general. Thus, in this article I investigate what attracts literary translators to continue working in the field of literary translation if monetary gain is only secondary for them. I employ the Bourdieusian concepts of disinterestedness and illusio to examine why the translators find the field and working in it so attractive that remuneration seems to be only secondary for them.  The data were collected in 2016 through an online questionnaire that was distributed only to Finnish translators who translate literature into Finnish. The analysis concentrated on the issues the respondents found either decreasing or increasing their work satisfaction. The qualitative analysis was complemented with quantitative analysis of such variables as age, satisfaction with the fees and whether the respondents work as full-time or part-time literary translators. The results reveal that the translators show tendency for disinterestedness of economic capital as they prefer utilizing and accumulating social and cultural capital over economic one. Thus, for these translators the illusio of the field is in finding satisfaction in the work itself.

Translation theory is never dogmatized. It is a dynamic and ever changing process. It is expected to respond positively to new developments in the studies of language and style. Cognitive stylistics is one of the major new developments in the study of style. It is based on viewing and analyzing style as a cognitive process of mind that goes beyond the boundaries of surface meaning to unearth the truth behind it. This process draws heavily on the cultural, social, political, and ideological conceptualization of style and meaning. The cognitive process of translating is claimed here to have been influenced by contemporary cognitive stylistic approaches that view meaning as the product of style as mind. This paper investigates the updated cognitive properties, responsibilities, practices and other characteristics to be assumed by the cognitive stylistic translator in the light of these new cognitive approaches to meaning and style in terms of mind. Accordingly, the cognitive translator is urged to approach the translation of the texts' styles and meaning cognitively to respond creatively to the explorations of cognitive stylistic theory and applications. This will make them uncover buried truths and meanings that cannot be discovered otherwise. Toward the end of the paper, a relativity theory of cognitive stylistic translation is put forward. This theory is flexible enough to respond effectively to all cognitive potentials of meaning and style. Further, it accommodates more than one cognitive version of translation by means of applying two suggested methods of translation to the same text: direct (or style-based); and indirect (non-style-based). This means that more freedom of choice of possible versions of translation is available to translators and readers to pick up.

Este estudo, primeiramente, apresenta uma discussão fundamentada na teoria e na experiência, tendo como temática central a tradução cultural. Deste modo, as discussões aqui desenvolvidas apontam a afinidade existente entre os Estudos da Tradução e os Estudos Culturais, devido à
influência que estes últimos exercem sobre os estudos da tradução cultural. O estudo traz concepções referentes à tradução cultural, abordando alguns aspectos importantes e intrínsecos a esta temática, tais como negociação e mediação cultural. Expõe ainda algumas considerações, especificamente, sobre a tradução da cultura brasileira, a partir de uma breve menção a pressupostos e discursos proferidos sobre a cultura do Brasil, que culminam em sua tradução cultural. A seguir, apresenta três obras do escritor brasileiro Milton Hatoum – Dois irmãos (2006), Cinzas do Norte (2005) e Órfãos do Eldorado (2008a) – as quais foram traduzidas pelo tradutor e crítico literário inglês John Gledson. Por fim, o estudo, embasado nos Estudos da Tradução e nos Estudos Culturais, imbui-se de analisar as traduções das respectivas obras, a saber: The Brothers (2002), Ashes of the Amazon (2008b) e Orphans of Eldorado (2009a). Nesse sentido, este trabalho aponta soluções encontradas pelo tradutor de Hatoum no que se refere, sobretudo, à tradução de elementos culturais presentes nestes romances, a fim de demonstrar que Gledson, ao final das traduções – por mais que suas ideias sobre tradução denotem, por vezes, forte apego ao texto fonte e certa sacralização deste – apresenta um novo
texto, isto é, uma reescrita. Para tanto, esta pesquisa conta com o embasamento teórico de importantes estudiosos das áreas dos Estudos da Tradução e dos Estudos Culturais, como Denys Cuche (1999), Peter Burke (2003, 2009), Stuart Hall (2011), Susan Bassnett (1998, 2007),
André Lefevere (2007) e também do tradutor John Gledson (1994, 2007, 2014).

Este artículo se propone: i) abordar la traducción al inglés de Martín Fierro de José Hernández, realizada por Walter Owen, desde una perspectiva centrada en la figura del traductor como agente cultural; ii) explorar la participación activa tanto de Owen como de sus patrocinadores en la concreción de su proyecto literario; iii) analizar las representaciones del gaucho plasmadas en los paratextos editoriales; iv) reconocer los discursos de la cultura de origen en interacción con nuevas interpretaciones, las cuales revelan la producción de nuevos significados como resultado de la traducción.

MEDICAL TRANSLATION AND DIFFICULTIES IN MEDICAL TRANSLATION
Medical science, one of the earliest scientific fields, is a science
discipline that is closely followed throughout the world and that always
keeps abreast of change and evolves constantly. Due to the fact that it is
related to human health, most information in this field such as a new
inventions, technological developments, and treatment methods are
shared among scientist around the world. This sharing occurs through
translation. Translations made in the field of medicine are defined by a
number of different terms, namely medical translation, translation for
medicine, medical text translation, translation of medical documents.
Translators who make translations in this area have zero tolerance to
errors. This is because even the slightest misunderstanding about health
can lead to fatal outcomes. In addition, many factors such as the unique
terminology used in medical language, Greek and Latin based terms, the
types of usage of these terms in the target language, and target language
equivalents make the task of translators - who are under such a heavy
burden - even more difficult. For this reason, medical translations cannot
be made by any translator. Not only that it is not enough to master both
languages (the translated and the target) but at the same time the
translator must have a certain knowledge and experience in the field.
In this study, the medical language and terminology and theoretical
information on the method of medical translation has been included in
the beginning. Then, the medical language and terminology in medical
texts, how international medical terminology adapts countries to their
own languages, and their equivalents in the daily language (intralingual
translation) have been examined. Finally, wrong translation approaches
and translation problems, which raise difficulties for translators and lead

In the world of ordinary work, there are many individuals and groups of individuals who have a personal or professional interest in judging how well or badly a particular job has been done or, more generally, how competent a certain person or team is in doing their work. In many sectors, such as motor car production, medical and dental care or running a shop, the people who buy the cars, the doctor's or dentists' patients and the shop customers all have a very acute interest in how well at least certain aspects of the work are carried out. The purchasers of motor cars will have little difficulty in deciding whether a car is reliable, comfortable and safe; patients, on the other hand, will have great difficulty, or may find it impossible, to know whether the doctor is killing them, curing them or doing nothing good or bad for their health, and whether their dentist is carrying out unnecessary work on their teeth or doing very intricate operations to save teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted; shop customers will at least know whether the prices are high or low, whether there is a wide range of products to suit them and whether the assistants treat them promptly, courteously and efficiently. Of course there are other aspects of these, and all other, types of work which are hidden "behind the scenes" and which affect the end user only very indirectly, if at all. For example, the car driver will know or care little about how efficient are the tools used in manufacturing his car; a patient will have little understanding of how a doctor or a dentist keeps accounts; a shop customer will have but scant interest in how the shopkeeper decides from which supplier to order his goods.

The development of Machine Translation system for ancient language such as Sanskrit language is much more fascinating and challenging task. In the proposed algorithm we integrate traditional dictionary rule based approach for translation which translate source English sentence into target Sanskrit sentence. It has two models Text to Text Translator module and Text to speech synthesizer module. Due to morphological richness of Sanskrit language, this system uses morphological markings to identify Subject, Object, Verb, Preposition, Adjective, Adverb sentences. This paper presents English to Sanskrit approach for translating well-structured English sentences into well-structured Sanskrit sentences.

The goal of this presentation is to show part of the results of the author’s Master’s dissertation conducted at the Trinity Centre for Literary and Cultural Translation in 2020. This study builds on the work developed by Professor Michael Cronin in the books Translation Goes to the Movies (2009) and Across the Lines: Travel, Language, Translation (2000). This presentation aims at answering the following question: what are the visual and thematic choices in the representation of intralingual translation in Brazilian cinematic travel narratives? The primary materials are two Brazilian films: Central Station (Water Salles, 1998) and Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Marcelo Gomes, 2005). The multiple codes of film language are important devices in the representation of intralingual translations in film, as together with language itself, they create a different set of codes, in other words, a new expanded language. For this reason, the chosen method of analysis is an interpretation of Casetti & Di Chio’s (1998: 126) approach for analysing the filmic text, which are: isolation, identification and interpretation. It is concluded that the thematic choices in the representation of intralingual translation in Brazilian cinematic travel narratives revolve around: 1) the effects of intralingual translation in each of the travellers’ identities; 2) the roles of intralingual translation in the relationship forged between travellers and; 3) the roles of intralingual translation in the relationship forged between travellers and secondary characters. In order to showcase the three themes, the visual choices in both films mostly rely on editing and frame composition. Symmetry proved to be the most relevant visual aspect to both cinematic narratives. The findings of this study reinforce that translation studies, film studies, and the study of travel narratives can benefit from one another as fields of research.

Çeviri teknolojileri ile çevirmenlerin çalışma koşullarında meydana gelen
değişiklikler günümüzde farklı açılardan incelenmektedir. Bu inceleme konularından
birisi de çeviri eylemi üyeleridir. Bu çalışma Bilgisayar Destekli Çeviri programları
ile çalışan çeviri üyelerinin pratik eylemleri, anlamlandırma ve ifade etme
metotlarına odaklanmaktadır. Bunun için bireyleri tek tek inceleyen etnometodolojik
araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada çevirmenler, redaktör / editörler,
yöneticiler ve öğrenciler ayrı ayrı incelenmiştir. Türkiye’de çevirmen meslek
odalarının olmayışı üye sayısını belirsiz kılmaktadır. Bu nedenle evreni tahmin etme
olasılığı düşüktür. Dolayısıyla olasılığı bilinmeyen örnekleme yöntemlerinden
kolaylıkla bulunabileni örnekleme yöntemine gidilmiştir. Yapılan yazılı görüşme,
yüz yüze görüşme ve gözlem şeklindeki veri toplama yöntemleri ile veri üçlemesi
sağlanmıştır. Etnometodolojik çözümleme çalışmalarında Maxqda 2018 ve 2020
programı kullanılmış, tarafların dizinsel / bağlama gönderimli ifadelerine, üyelerin
pratik eylemlerine, pratik eylemlerinin refleksif özelliklerine ve üyelerin arka plan
beklentilerine bakılmıştır. Katılımcıların Bilgisayar Destekli Çeviriyi kullanma ile
ilgili ifadeleri incelendiğinde, arka plan beklentilerine ve gündelik pratik eylemlerine
göre değişebilen çeşitli anlamlandırma metotları kullanabildikleri gözlemlenmiştir.
Çevirmenlerin bu programları bulundukları statü içerisinde üst denetim
mekanizmalarına bağlı anlamlandırdığı, redaktör / editörlerin ticari ilişkiler ve statü
içerisinde değerlendirdiği, yöneticilerin ticari ilişkilerine ve arka plan beklentilerine
bağlı anlamlandırdığı, öğrencilerin ise eğitim ve deneyimlerine bağlı, görev yerine
getirme beklentisi içerisinde anlamlandırdıkları gözlemlenmiştir. Ancak bu
genellemelerin katılımcıların süre gelen icraları olduğunu ve bunların içlerinde de
farklılıklar bulunduğu belirtmek gerekir. Bunlar çalışmada detaylı bir şekilde
aktarılmıştır. Çalışma teknolojinin ilerleyişinde çoğulcu yaklaşımların aksine
bireysel farklılıklara bakılarak yapılmıştır. Çeviri teknolojileri ve özellikle Bilgisayar
Destekli Çeviri araçları çevirmenlere yardımcı programlar olarak profesyonel
çevirmenlerin elinde kaliteli çeviri üretilmesine yardımcı araçlar olarak uzun yıllar
daha kullanılmaya devam edecektir. Bireysel anlamlandırma yöntemlerinin bu
yöntemle analiz edilmesi teknoloji konusunu Çeviribilim’de dost / düşman gibi
ikilemlerden kurtararak bu programların üreticilerine ve en önemlisi Çeviribilim
alanına çeviri eylemindeki üyelerin bakış açılarındaki farklılıklar ile ilgili önemli
veriler sunmaktadır.

CRITICAL THINKING ON COMPUTER AIDED TRANSLATION

The changes taking place within the way of translators work style caused by
translation technologies have currently been searched in several subtopics. One of
these subtopics is the members of translation act. In this study we focus on the
practices of everyday lives, sense methods and expression methods of the translation
members who works with Computer Aided Translation tools. So, we applied
Etnometodology research method which based on analysis of particularly
individuals. All the translators, redactors/ editors, managers, and students were
analysed individually in groups. The number of the members is not known exactly
due to lack of chambers of translators. So, it is unlikely to know exact numbers of the
research universe. Consequently, we used convenience sampling method in unknown
probability sampling method. We assured a data trilogy by using data collection
methods like interviews in written form, semi-structured interviews, and observation.
We used Maxqda 2018 and Maxqda 2020 during this ethnomethodological
interrogation study and we looked for indexical expressions of individuals, practical
actions of members, reflexivity of those practical actions and background
expectations of members. Regarding participants' expressions on using Computer
Aided Translation, it is obvious that participants use various sense-making methods
changing according to their background expectations and everyday practical actions.
We concluded that translators reason out these programmes according to their status,
related to top-down control system, redactors / editors reason out these programmes
according to their commercial relations and status, managers reason out these
programmes according to commercial relations and their own background
expectations, students reason out these programmes according to their education and
experience history and fulfilment of duty expectations. But we need to state that
these generalizations are ongoing accomplishments of the participants and among
these generalizations there are some disparities, too. Detailed explanations are given
within the paper. This research was carried out by analysing the individual
disparities unlike the other generalist approaches on technological progresses.
Translation technologies and especially Computer Aided Translation tools are going
to be used for long years as utilities for translators and tools that help to produce
good quality translations in professional translators’ hands. Analysing individual
sense-making methods in this way will give important data, related to disparities in
perspectives of translation act members, both for developers of these programmes
and especially for translation studies field by saving the technology issue in
translation studies from the dilemma of friend / foe in translation studies.

Abstract:
In recent years the need for translation services and translators for community services has increased with the rise in flow of migrant population to Turkey. One of the main fields of community interpreting, carried out to meet the community services need, is of mental health where psychotherapy interviews are conducted. Within this mental health field, there is a therapy process that is carried out with the relevant field of expertise, such as the profile and needs of the clients, interview methods and techniques, and question types. When we consider the main group of clients as migrants in Turkey, it is also essential to take into account pre-migration, migration and post-migration processes, traumas that appear as a consequence of these experiences, cultural differences and different therapautical approaches. Based on these facts, it is essential to question the interpreter’s role via not only in means of transferring words to another language, but also as an intercultural communication specialist in theraphy. It is aimed to bring out the cooperation between related parties by revealing the role and importance of interpreters working in psychotherapies. For this purpose, in this study, the theoretical and conceptual framework of the fields of mental health and community interpreting has established, the dynamics of psychotherapy in the context of the contingency relationship were determined and problematized in terms of its effect on the translation process. As a result, the role and importance of translators in psychotherapies tried to be revealed in relation with expert and interpreter collaboration.

Özet:
Son yıllarda alınan dış göçle birlikte, Türkiye’de ülke dilini bilmeyen kişilerin toplum hizmetlerine ulaşabilmesini olanaklı kılacak, çeviriye ve çevirmene duyulan ihtiyaç artmıştır. Söz konusu ihtiyacı karşılamak üzere sürdürülen toplum çevirmenliğinin uygulama alanlarından bir tanesi psikoterapi görüşmelerinin gerçekleştirildiği ruh sağlığı alanıdır. Konu ruh sağlığı olduğunda, danışanların profili ve ihtiyaçları, görüşme yöntem ve teknikleri, soru türleri gibi ilgili alanın uzmanlık bilgisiyle sürdürülen bir terapi süreci söz konusu olmaktadır. Türkiye’de bu tür terapilerde çeviriye ihtiyaç duyanların göçmenler olduğu dikkate alındığında, mevcut dinamiklere göç öncesi, göç sırası ve göç sonrası yaşadıklarının bir sonucu olan travmaların derinliği, kültür ve gelenek farklılıkları, terapiye olan bakış açısı gibi çok daha farklı faktörlerin de belirleyici şekilde eklemlendiği söylenebilir. Buna göre çevirmenin psikoterapideki görevinin, sadece kelimelerin başka bir dile aktarılmasıyla sınırlı olması mümkün görünmemektedir. Bu çıkarım, söz konusu süreçte çevirmenin, kültürler arası iletişim uzmanı olarak, terapideki rolünün araştırılmasını önemli hale getirmiştir. Buradan hareketle bu araştırmada psikoterapilerde görev alan çevirmenlerin rolü ve önemi ortaya koyularak, taraflar açısından işbirliğinin somutlaştırılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla bu çalışmada ruh sağlığı ve toplum çevirmenliği alanlarının kuramsal ve kavramsal çerçevesi oluşturulmuş, durumsallık ilişkisi bağlamında psikoterapideki dinamikler belirlenmiş ve çeviri sürecine etkisi açısından sorunsallaştırılmıştır. Yapılan araştırma ve değerlendirmeler sonucunda çevirmenlerin psikoterapilerdeki rolü ve önemi, uzman ve çevirmen işbirliği odağında ortaya konulmuştur.

Este trabajo introductorio estudia algunas características de la traducción al castellano (2001) de LTI por Adan Kovacsics, quien se decide mayormente por la variante de traducción conocida como «expuesta». Nos concentramos por igual en los aspectos culturales y en los lingüísticos. Repasamos, entre otros aspectos relevantes, la traducción del lenguaje figurado, la intensificación y atenuación del original, y la transferencia/ presencia de la ironía en la traducción. 

To many, it may come as a shock that in 2013 itself the translation industry in India was as big as a billion dollar (6500 Cr approx) market. Without any doubt, it is one of the fastest growing sectors in terms of economy, increased from US$40 million in 2007 to US$900 million in 2013. It would further reflect upon the impact and contribution to the language community in terms of economy.
