Style

This dissertation is based on a long-term ethnographic and sociophonetic study of 15 transgender people on the female-to-male (or transmasculine) identity spectrum. The focus of the study is the way these individuals’ voices change during the first 1-2 years of masculinizing hormone therapy, which brings about a drop in vocal pitch along with other salient physiological changes. Based on regular recordings of participants during a one year period, the analysis tracks changes in fundamental frequency as well as formant frequencies and the acoustic characteristics of [s], each of which has a different place in biology-driven theories of gender and the voice. In addition to ostensibly hormonally driven changes to speakers’ available fundamental frequency range, I present evidence that these speakers are engaged in various types of articulatory shifts as part of their gender role transition, which affect both formants and [s]. However, I argue that changes in all three of the phonetic domains examined here must be situated in both sociocultural and linguistic context, even where biology appears to play a significant role. The analyses presented, which include attention to both intra- and inter-speaker variation, draw on a multi-layered understanding of gender derived from transgender people’s own distinctions between gender assignment, gender role, gender identity, and gender presentation. My speakers’ metalinguistic commentary on gender and the voice further elucidates the constellations of phonetic features that combine to create their cohesive gendered speaking styles. Ultimately, I focus on the ways that changes in one phonetic variable, like pitch, can recontextualize other elements of a speaker’s linguistic style, like the acoustic spectrum of [s]. This connection drives home the necessity of considering the relationship between linguistic characteristics, rather than treating them as entirely separable variables. Attention to stylistic wholes, over individual variables, points us toward the notion that transmasculine individuals do not engage in across-the-board masculinization, but rather bring together acoustic characteristics acquired from disparate sources in order to construct phonetic styles that reflect their complex affiliations with manhood, maleness, and masculinity.

In an essay titled "Femininity," Sigmund Freud is noted for having observed that "[t]hroughout history people have knocked their heads against the riddle of the nature of femininity" (22:113). Yet Freud was certainly not the first to have raised the question. In a chronicle titled "Une femme" published in 1882, Guy de Maupassant had cited a similar inability to explain la femme: "Nous ne la comprenons pas, nous ne la pressentons pas; nous ne l'expliquons jamais" 'We do not understand her, we cannot fathom her; we never explain her' (Chroniques 2: 113). We examine the most famous controversy between economists as a means of shedding fresh light on the current debate about economic methodology. By focusing on the controversy as the primary unit of analysis, we show how methodological considerations are but one of a whole set of stratagems strategically employed by each opponent. We argue that each opponent's preference for a particular kind of stratagems expresses his own specific scientific style. We also describe a dynamic dimension of the controversy, independent of the participants' intentions, which we analyse in a "cycle" of the controversy. The definition and re-definition of the issue(s) at stake and of the difference between both participants is an essential and recurrent feature of such cycles; the conclusion of a cycle does not imply a real closure of the controversy, but only persuasion. Rather, its benefit seems to lie in an unintended result - clarification and deepening of contrasting approaches to the discipline  -  due to its peculiar dynamics. In so far as the history of a discipline requires a reconstruction of such contrasts, it is indispensable for it to take into account the controversies where they emerge, and to view both the positive doctrines and the methodological posture of the contenders as parts of a wider framework, that is a scientific style.

Klasik Türk nesir edebiyatında ayrı bir yeri olan Ta-zarru'-nâme Sinan Paşa'nın hayatının son döneminde kaleme aldığı üç Türkçe eserinden ilkidir. Nesir edebiyatımız söz konusu edilirken adından bahsedilmeden geçilemeyecek olan çalışma, kaynakların estetik nesrin en önemli ürünü olarak ifade ettiği bir eserdir. Tazarru'-nâme ahlâkî, didaktik, aynı zamanda tarikat ve tasavvuf yolunun hakikatlerini öğreten bir eser olmanın yanında bu konuların anlatılış biçimi yönüyle de pek çok eserden farklı özelliklere sahiptir. Çalışmanın ilk makalesinde eseri farklı kılan özelliklerden birinin onun anlatım biçimi olduğu, eseri oluşturan söz düzeninin ikili (simetrik) yapısı üzerinde durulmuştu. Tazarru'-nâme'nin baştan sona simetrik yapılarla yazıldığı ve yapıların çeşitleri ve nitelikleri ele alınmıştı. Bir önceki çalışmada yapıların esere katkıları ve onu değerli kılan yönlerine vurgu yapıldı 1. Bu yazıda ise Tazarru'-nâme'yi oluşturan yapıların eseri sanatsal yönden güçlü kılan özellikleri tespit edilip bu yapıların nesir cümlelerini şiirsel öğelerle nasıl donattığı açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır. Estetik nesir ürünleri incelendiğinde şiir ile nesir cümleleri arasındaki farkın gittikçe azaldığı gözlen-mektedir. Şiire ait birçok özellik, şiir araçları vasıtasıyla nesir cümlelerine aktarılır. Tazarru'-nâme'de kullanılan simetrik yapılar, şiirsel özelliklerin esere aktarılmasında bir araç görevindedir. Eserin anlatımındaki estetik düzey bu simetrik yapılarla eserde var olabilmişlerdir. Bu bakımdan eseri oluşturan simetrik yapıların özelliklerinin tespit edil-mesi aynı zamanda şiirsel özelliklerin esere nasıl aktarıldığı-nın bulunmasına ve eserin sanat yönünün ortaya konma-sına da yardımcı olacaktır. A B S T R A C T Tazarru'nâme is the first book of three Turkish works, Sinan Pasha wrote up in the last period of his life, has a distinct place in classical Turkish prose literature. While we are talking about prose literature it is a work that can not be passed without mentioning, expressed by sources as the most important product of aesthetic prose. It is a moral, didactic book at the same time teaches the truths of the religious order and mystic way. It has a different style than many works when these subjects is mentioning. In the first article of the study, it was emphasized that one of the different characteristics of the work is, its form of expression, and the dual (symmetrical) structure of the composition. Tazarru'-nâme was written from the begining to the end with symmetrical construction, and the types and qualities of the sutructure were discussed. Contribution of symmetrical structures and sructure aspects that make the book worthwhile were emphasized with previous article. In this paper the symmetrical structures of Tazarru'-nâme are determined by their powerful artistic features, and it will be attempted to explain how these structures furnish the prose with poetic elements. When the product of aesthetic prose are examined, it is observed that the differences between poetry and prose is gradually decreasing. Many features of poetry are transmitted to prose through poetry tools. The symmetrical constructions used in Tazarru'-nâme are a vehicle for transferring poetic features. The aesthetic level of the expression of the book has existed in with these symmetrical constructions. In this regard, to determine the characteristics of symmetric structures of work also will help to have transferred to trace how the poetic features. It will also help to reveal the artistic direction of the work.

The beach has long been a privileged site in Australian culture, and surfers have become icons of it. These men are often referred to as straight as steel, strong as granite, austere and inviolate. Drawing on over three decades worth of surfing I unpack this hegemonic understanding of men who surf, and reveal in its place the importance of feelings and bodies to their lives. Through an analysis of going surfing I articulate the role feelings and bodies play in how men belong, how they bond with their ‘turf’, come to understand themselves as masculine, and how they learn to do masculinity.

Images play an important role in the real world, images are used for describing the changes in the environment and also use of traffic analysis. Images are captured in open environment due to the bed whether or atmosphere images are not a clear. Images acquired in the bad weather, such as the fog and haze, are extremely degraded by scatting of the atmosphere, which creates the image color gray, decreases the contrast and create the object features challenging to recognize. The bad weather not only lead to variant of the visual outcome of the image, but also to the difficulty of the post processing of the image, as well as the inconvenience of entirely types of the tools which rely on the optical imaging, such as satellite remote sensing method, aerial photo method, outdoor monitoring method and object identification method. There are some prior assumptions which need to be considered in removal of the fog. So basically fog removal algorithms work by estimating the depth. There are numerous applications of fog removal such as in the case of navigation and tracking, entertaining industries, and customer electronics.

This paper presents a system, specially designed for the grape spraying through a robotic system. Agricultural Robotics is the logical proliferation of automation technology into bio systems such as agriculture, forestry, green house, horticulture etc. Presently a number of researches are being done to increase their applications. Some of the scientist contributions are mobile robot, flying robot, forester robot, Demeter which are exclusively used for agriculture. Humans are force to work in risky environment while spraying chemicals and pesticides on the crops for bug control. The tractors compress the soil, as they are heavier in weight. They cannot move in terrain environment. These techniques cannot recognize the crop and soil in close propinquity. Main aim is to avoid manual spraying of pesticides at actual farm, which will apparently reduce the impact of harmful chemicals on humans due to direction interaction of chemicals in manual spraying, and also increase the productivity of grapes. It will achieve by replacing human by a robotic system which will do the task of pesticides spraying over.

Looking at several related texts, the author explores how the testimonios (or testimonial writing) of queer Spanish speakers across the Americas attest to the social complexities embedded in alternative and dominant formulations of familial experiences. In this study, the author examines the writing of three writers who collect testimonios - Arnaldo Cruz-Malavé, Norma Mogrovejo, and Mariana Romo-Carmona. Through discussing these writers' collections, this project considers how collections of queer testimonios from the early 2000s have the effect of decentering and reconfiguring the conventional family sphere in ways that benefit vulnerable populations. Instead of maintaining dominant familial paradigms, editors and participants involved in such collections (re)conceptualize familial experiences by breaking domestic silences around queer desires.

Some pictures are exciting, others aren't. Some are art, some are advertising, others were perhaps drawn by a small child. But regardless of whether we are seeing a picture because someone has sold access to our consciousness for a few cents or because a good friend has posted it on our profile: images now have little time to grab our attention.
Every day subtle ink drawings fight fixed fights against creations of international advertising agencies in my online feed. If the algorithm actually lets a picture through, a decision is quickly taken on what we look at for longer and what immediately returns to the proverbial flood of images. We tend to dislike advertising that forces itself on us in a commercial break or through blinking gif banners. Here I will argue that working with drawing style artists can create pictures that oppose expectations to grab and hold our attention.

The Grolier Codex (Codice Maya de Mexico, CMM) is discussed in the context of the archaeoastronomy of the ancient Americas on pages 98-99 of the March 1990 National Geographic Magazine article "America's Ancient Skywatchers" by John B. Carlson. One of four known ancient Maya books, the Grolier Codex depicts different manifestations of the planet Venus; the column of glyphs on the left of each panel records days in a 104-year Venus almanac. These plaster-coated bark-paper pages, carbon-dated to the 13th century, represent only half of the 20-page original. A numbered photographic arrangement of the Grolier Codex depictes the author's discovery that Codex pages 10 and 11 are actually two parts of the same "page 10".  Carlson clarifies the identities of Venus deities depicted in the Grolier Codex from a comparison of images from the Cacaxtla murals and links the images of the Grolier Codex with ancient Maya astronomically timed ritual warfare and sacrifice. Статья посвящена подробному исследованию художественных принципов, свойственных портретной живописи сентиментализма. Внимательное рассмотрение женских портретов, созданных И.-Б.Лампи-Старшим, В.Л.Боровиковским и М.-Э.Виже-Лебрен, позволяет выявить не только совокупность приемов, но и особую их трактовку в творческой концепции каждого мастера. В результате исследования портретная живопись сентиментализма впервые определяется как художественная система, которая обладает конкретными характеристиками и заметно отличается от классицизма и романтизма в художественной ситуации на рубеже XVIII–XIX веков.

The article is dedicated to the thorough research of artistic principles, inherent to the portrait painting of Russian sentimentalism. The detailed analyze of female portraits, created by I.B.Lampi the Elder, V.L.Borovikovsky and E.Vigee Le Brun, gives an opportunity to reveal not only the set of methods, but also their singular interpretation in conception of each artist. In result, the portrait painting of Russian sentimentalism is first determined as the artistic system, which has specific features and considerably differs from classicism and romanticism at the turn of the 18-19th centuries.

Целью статьи является изучение нескольких женских портретов В.Л. Боровиковского первой половины 1800-х годов, рассмотрение которых позволяет выявить важную методологическую проблему – роль стилистических определений для описания конкретных произведений в ситуации параллельного существования разных художественных тенденций (классицизм, романтизм, сентиментализм).

The objective of the article is the research of several Borovikovsky female portraits created in the first half of the 1800-ies. Their consideration allows revealing important methodological problem. It is the use of different style definitions in the description of the works in a situation of coexistence of classicism, romanticism and sentimentalism.

In the 1970s, Hollywood experienced a creative surge, opening a new era in American cinema with films that challenged traditional modes of storytelling. Inspired by European and Asian art cinema as well as Hollywood’s own history of narrative ingenuity, directors such as Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, William Friedkin, Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen, and Francis Ford Coppola undermined the harmony of traditional Hollywood cinema and created some of the best movies ever to come out of the American film industry. Critics have previously viewed these films as a response to the cultural and political upheavals of the 1970s, but until now no one has explored how the period’s inventive narrative design represents one of the great artistic accomplishments of American cinema.

In Hollywood Incoherent, Todd Berliner offers the first thorough analysis of the narrative and stylistic innovations of seventies cinema and its influence on contemporary American filmmaking. He examines not just formally eccentric films—Nashville; Taxi Driver; A Clockwork Orange; The Godfather, Part II; and the films of John Cassavetes—but also mainstream commercial films, including The Exorcist, The Godfather, The French Connection, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Dog Day Afternoon, Chinatown, The Bad News Bears, Patton, All the President’s Men, Annie Hall, and many others. With persuasive analyses, Berliner demonstrates the centrality of this period to the history of Hollywood’s formal development, showing how seventies films represent the key turning point between the storytelling modes of the studio era and those of modern American cinema.

This paper surveys HTML web pages; not only on textual content, but with an emphasis on higher order visual features and supplementary technology. Using a crawler with an in-house developed rendering engine, data on a pseudo-random sample of web pages is collected. First, several basic attributes are collected to verify the collection process and confirm certain assumptions on web page text. Next, we take a look at the distribution of different types of page content (text, images, plug-in objects, and forms) in terms of rendered visual area. Those different types of content are broken down into a detailed view of the ways in which the content is used. This includes a look at the prevalence and usage of scripts and styles. We conclude that more complex page elements play a significant and underestimated role in the visually attractive, media rich, and highly interactive web pages that are currently being added to the World Wide...

Following a number of studies on translator style, this paper attempts to apply corpus linguistics methods used in translation studies and inspired by stylometry to verify whether interpreters also demonstrate features of individual style.
Interpreting style is viewed here as a way of interpreting which is characterized by a consistent prominence of one or many linguistic features in interpretations from different source languages that make one’s interpretations distinguishable from those of others, as well as from one’s own speaking style. Style is approached from the point of view of authorship attribution and stylometry, i.e. described by quantitative linguistic discriminators, which in the present study are the parameters indicating the tendency to repetitiveness, informativeness and lexical
sophistication.

Dichotomy is a serious obstacle in archaeological studies; it is a problem all fields of human, social and historical knowledge and even natural sciences are faced with. However, in archaeology, especially prehistoric archaeology, this problem is followed with practical difficulties and epistemological failures as well. What is referred to as archaeological evidences are all wordless, distorted, and shattered into pieces which must be archaeologically organized, joined, structured, repaired, described, written, interpreted, analyzed, represented, reconstructed or conceptually, mentally and virtually reconstructed so that we can extract some kind of archaeological meaning and significance out of its material body despite its limitations and imperfections; an understanding that is not quite unrelated with the past events.
By raising the key issue of style and symbol, the present paper attempts to study the possibility or impossibility of obtaining this goal in archaeological researches.
The archaeological relics, when interpreted and analyzed semantically within a systematic methodology suitable to the subjects under study, can help build a bridge over to the conceptual systems, mental performances and forgotten desolate behaviours of ancient societies and populations. For this reason, the present paper has chosen the style and symbol like a bridge between the archaeological visible evidences and data and the past frozen conceptions and behaviours as its main topic.

"The concept of injecting photovoltaic power into the utility grid has earned widespread acceptance in these days of renewable energy generation & distribution. Grid-connected inverters have evolved significantly with high diversity. Efficiency, size, weight, reliability etc. have all improved significantly with the development of modern and innovative inverter configurations and these factors have influenced the cost of producing inverters. This paper presents a literature review of the recent technological developments and trends in the Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (GCPVS). In countries with high penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) resources, GCPVS have been shown to cause unwanted stress on the electrical grid. A review of the existing and future standards that addresses the technical challenges associated with the growing number of GCPVS is presented. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), Solar Tracking (ST) and the use of transform-less inverters can all lead to high efficiency gains of Photovoltaic (PV) systems while ensuring minimal interference with the grid. Inverters that support ancillary services like reactive power control, frequency regulation and energy storage are critical for mitigating the challenges caused by the growing adoption of GCPVS. Researchers have long been fascinated with youth subcultures. Decades of study have yielded several competing paradigms, which attempt to interpret these subcultures in diverse ways, with each succeeding paradigm criticizing, and attempting to improve on, those that came before it. Rather than offering criticism of a specific youth studies paradigm, this article provides a critique of this body of theory as a whole by delineating several theoretical assumptions that have persisted across these perspectives. These include: (1) the tendency to group all youth phenomena under a monolithic conceptual umbrella; (2) a preoccupation on the part of researchers with style and the consumption of goods; and (3) the assumed lack of rational behavior found in subcultures and an accompanying inability on the part of subcultures to achieve real goals or effect social change. It is argued that such assumptions trivialize subcultures, have led to a priori understandings of these without adequate empirical grounding, and must be addressed if subcultures are to be adequately understood and appreciated.

Since the end of the 1980s – the Decade of Style (Mort, 1996) – the value of style in design has fallen. Recent times (Whicher et al., 2015) see a focus on style as a sign of design’s immaturity, while a more mature design should be attending to process, strategy and policy creation. Design Thinking has been enjoying its success in the same spirit, where it is championed (Brown, 2008; Martin, 2009; Neumeier, 2009) as a way of taking design away from its early stage as ‘mere’ styling, towards the more thoughtful, serious matters of business.
The philosopher Gilles Deleuze is of a different mind however. ‘Style,’ he writes (1995, p.31), ‘amounts to innovation.’ For us this engages not only a rethinking of design practice in particular, but also a reconsideration of the guiding principles of scenario planning. Deleuze’s thought entails the opportunity for styling to be an act that participates in driving all creativity towards making a successful future impact (Flynn & Chatman, 2004; Cox, 2005). A philosophical disruption of current design and scenarios orthodoxies offers a way of considering that style has a key role in the production of the future.
Here, then, we will investigate the creative, even innovative, opportunities that emerge from a reworking of the value of style that comes from a critique of Design Thinking, a perspective on future-thinking (especially scenario planning (e.g. Schwartz, 1991; Li, 2014; Ramírez & Selin, 2014), but also some work from organisation and management studies (e.g. Tsoukas, 2005a, 2005b)), and an encounter with philosophy (particularly the work of Deleuze & Guattari (1984, 1987, 1994). We will highlight the affective capacities of style – in design and scenarios, both as creative constructing of futures – by way of creatively accessing uncertainty, complexity and indeterminacy in the production of strategic maps for living (both individuals and organisations).

Rabindranath Tagore and Lakshminath Bezbaruah are the most prolific and pioneering short story writers of Bengali and Assamese literature. They have their distinctive contributions to the respective literary worlds which also contribute a lot in the growth and development of Indian Literature. Many critics opine that Bezbaruah was influenced by the contemporary Bengali Literature and its imprint is clearly visible in his writings .But it is undoubtedly true that despite being influenced by Bengali Literature, the writings of Bezbaruah were completely original in matters of their objectives, style and techniques. The present paper is a comparative analysis of the art of characterization, plot construction and other related literary characteristics of Tagore and Bezbaruah with special reference to two of their famous short stories “Chuti” and “Mukti”
