Jonathan Coe

In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, globalization has significantly influenced gendered experiences worldwide. While scholarly attention has predominantly focused on women’s lives and marked gender identities since the seventies, there remains a conspicuous gap in the exploration of the phenomenically “unmarked” gender and particularly men’s identities and the unique challenges they face. Drawing upon a diverse array of texts and ideas from cultural theory, this book delves into crucial issues surrounding masculinity; the shame, struggle, precariousness, and predicaments inherent in navigating the expectations of being “a man” in today’s era of neoliberalism and globalization. Through the lens of the main characters in novels by Bret Easton Ellis, Jonathan Coe, Yann Martel and Christos Tsiolkas, all from the anglophone sphere, the narrative illuminates these often overlooked facets of masculinity crisis. The book seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of masculinities today, shedding light upon the vulnerable nature of the masculine experience.

Throughout the centuries, sex and the depiction of sex have been object of censorship due to the moral principles in a given historical period, being often regulated by cultural conventions, such as religion, ethics, science, or law. All these aspects led to establishing what was acceptable and what had to be rejected as pervert (Mudge 2017). Similarly, translations followed the same constraints of a given age in a given culture which shaped the Target Text. This paper intends to investigate the translations of Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a woman of pleasure (1749) by John Cleland in a diachronic perspective. This epistolary novel, overtly erotic and a specific example of the English erotic novel of that time, counts about 38 translations into Italian, the first of which dating back to 1918. Since the euphemisms in the novel distinguish it from other pornographic works, critics have discussed how Fanny’s language affects the sexual scenes she describes. In fact, Cleland’s use of euphemisms (Hollander 1963) and metaphorical language to describe Fanny’s sexual adventures was intended to avoid taboo words in order to avoid prosecution. The language idealizes and glamorizes sexual acts, elevating them out of the lewd realm of vulgar pornography and lends an appearance of cleanness and purity to the sexual relationships. Through the use of euphemisms and metonymy (Spedding and Lambert 2011) in describing sexual acts, Cleland creates images that are artistic images reminiscent of paintings and sculptures. The aim of the paper is thus to describe the way in which euphemisms and metaphors of sexual activities are translated into Italian, focusing on three Italian editions published in a given span of time of roughly fifty years: in 1921, 1964 and 2001.

What we talk about when we talk about humor? To what extent can one talk today about humor? This chapter discusses the importance of popular musical styles in Jonathan Coe's The Rotters Club, both thematically and as a way of thinking about the formal aspects of the novel. I argue that the popular cultural narrative of the transition from prog rock to punk is addressed and complicated in the novel and forms a backdrop for the youthful characters’ processes of identity formation as they move from adolescence into adulthood. This also forms a wider context for the novel’s discussion of 1970s politics. I also argue that this tension between prog and punk is embedded in Coe's formal style in the novel which hovers between modernist experimentalism (associated with prog) and the harsher (popular) realism of punk.

È un'intervista per Musica Jazz. Bene: allora non parleremo di Tony Blair e Gordon Brown. Se vuoi possiamo parlarne co-munque. Solamente da un punto di vista mu-sicale. Be', ho letto da qualche parte che a Blair, da giovane, piacevano i Van Der Graaf Generator (ma non so se sia vero, soprattutto adesso, dopo Every Bloody Emperor). A Tony Blair? Non ne avevo idea. È la cosa più interessante che abbia mai sentito su di lui. La musica ha un ruolo in buona parte dei tuoi romanzi (e racconti). Il più recente, La pioggia prima che cada, ha il titolo di un brano di Michael Gibbs: quale delle due versio-ni di The Rain Before It Falls avevi in mente? Quella di Gary Burton del 1973 o quella dell'orchestra di Gibbs vent'anni dopo? Io ho quella con Burton. Dunque ti piace Burton: in Circolo chiuso un pia-nista d'albergo suona The Night Has A Thousand Eyes e il personaggio che l'ascolta (Phil) dice che Stéphane Grappelli ne fece una bella versione. Se non sbaglio, è quella con Burton sull'album del 1972 «Paris Encounter». Sì ed è proprio bella. I tardi anni Settanta furono un pe-riodo duro in Gran Bretagna per chi apprezzasse il tipo di musica che piaceva a me: non necessariamente progressive rock ma musica strumentale complessa, come quella di Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine e compa-gnia bella. Circolava pochissima musica nuova in quella vena e così cominciai a guardarmi attorno alla ricerca d'altro. Qualcuno mi disse di Burton (e dell'Ecm) ma a Birmingham non c'era traccia dei suoi dischi. Cercavo soprattutto «Seven Songs For Quartet And Chamber Orchestra»: prometteva di essere esattamente il mio genere di cosa ma non riuscivo a trovarlo da nessuna parte (ovviamente non c'era ancora internet). Alla fine lo comprai a Firenze, in gita scolastica, e mi piacque mol-to. In seguito acquistai all'incirca i tre quarti di tutto ciò che Burton ha inciso (che è tantissimo). E pensavo alla versione che è su quel disco quando ho scelto il titolo del mio ultimo libro. Non conosco l'altra. Dicevi che è più recente? 1993. Guarda: qui ci sono la formazione e i dati del-l'album. Ah, ecco, «By The Way», pubblicato dalla Ah Um. Devo procurarmelo, anche se sarà sicuramente fuori catalogo. Bella formazione. Gibbs e Steve Swallow sono in entrambi i dischi. È vero. E Bob Moses, che qui è nella big band di Gibbs, suonava con il quartetto di Burton: non in «Seven Songs For Quartet And Chamber Orchestra» ma in quegli anni era spesso con lui. Ah, in «By The Way» ci sono John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Iain Ballamy… Sì, devo trovarlo. Oltre a Burton quali sono i tuoi jazzisti preferiti? Ho gusti musicali molto specifici e specializzati, e tanti periodi non m'interessano. Per esempio la musica clas-sica mi piace fino a Bach e poi più niente fino a Ravel e Debussy. E così di jazz ascolto raramente cose prece-denti a «Kind Of Blue». Quindi amo Davis; e Bill Evans, che per me è il più grande pianista jazz; mi piacciono Mingus, Swallow, Carla Bley… La cosa strana è che in realtà non mi interessa poi tanto l'improvvisazione ma mi affascinano i procedimenti strutturali del jazz e i musicisti che prendono quell'aspetto della musica, ci lavorano so-pra e lo spingono un po' oltre, come ha fatto Carla Bley con certe composizioni e arrangiamenti molto elaborati. This paper proposes to confront the tenets of detective fiction and postmodernism in Jonathan Coe’s What a Carve up! (1994), principally by focusing on one of the main assumptions related to both domains, which is that they mainly entail playfulness, either through the solving of an enigma or through parody and pastiche, and may therefore be impervious to politics and affects. The analysis of What a Carve up! will show to what extent the novel uses and abuses the codes and conventions of the whodunit in a playful way, and displays some of the specific features of postmodernism (epistemological and ontological concerns, narrative games, self-reflexivity…), so that it may be seen as an example of metafictional detective story. At the same time however, the novel proposes a satire of the social and economic ills of British society during the Thatcher years and unveils collective and epidemic crimes committed during that era. The novel thus moves beyond the enclosed space and individual crimes of classic detective fiction and beyond the supposed playfulness and self-centeredness of postmodernism to encompass a broader political, social, ethical and emotional scope.

This paper examines Jonathan Coe’s biography of British experimental writer B.S. Johnson (1933-1973), Like a Fiery Elephant, which may be called a post-biography. It shows in which ways Coe simultaneously deconstructs some of the conventions of literary biography and echoes innovative devices developed by Johnson in his novels.

Erano ormai mesi che ogni mattina il mio risveglio era accolto da una nebbia grigia e fitta oltre la quale non vedevo nulla e il mondo reale-quello che si dà per scontato-pareva evaporato e io mi trovavo solo e alla deriva in un Universo freddo e ostile. Non riuscivo più a elaborare alcun pensiero positivo: un de-siderio, una speranza, la fiducia in qualcosa. e Tutto nella mia vita sembrava essere andato definitivamente in malora. Con mia moglie era finita. Gli amici dileguati. Il lavoro, poi dove non riuscivo a combinare più nulla, era diventato un supplizio cui avevo finalmente messo fine pren-dendomi un anno sabbatico. «C'è qualcuno là fuori?» provavo ogni tanto a chiedere, e, non ricevendo alcuna risposta, continuavo rassegnato un insa-no isolamento sempre più vicino alla resa definitiva. Il dottor Kaufmann era piccolo di statura fisica, anche se quella interiore o spirituale-o come diavolo volete chiamarla-mi parve fin dal nostro primo incontro smisurata.

Lascia che ti parli di uno dei miei posti preferiti a (in) Curitiba: Innanzitutto, serve sapere che la mia città è grande (la popolazione conta circa duecento milioni). Sì, siamo in molti :) e com'è l'atteggiamento della gente che abita qui? Beh, diciamo che , in una certa misura, assomiglia a quello degli europei. Ma va'! Sul serio? Beh, almeno questo è ciò a cui vogliono credere i curitibani. Ora ti prendo per mano e ti porto a fare un bel giro, che ne dici, honey ? :) Ma ti avviso, con tante salite e discese di certo ti sentirai come se fossi su delle montagne russe, perciò tieniti forte! Cosa? In Macchina? No, Prendiamo le bici. Già all'inizio dobbiamo fare uno sforzo per salire la via ripida e piena di buche di casa mia. Dai, spingiamoci fino alla palestra che si vede proprio dietro l'angolo alla (sulla) sinistra. Ancora qui con me? Ottimo! Continuamo pure. Allora, se proseguiamo nella direzione attuale faremo un vero downhill urbano poiché c'è una bella discesona da far venire i brividi :P Ma non lasciarti prendere dal panico piccola mia (kissy 8-)) puoi tenere il freno premuto tutto il tempo, non ti giudicherò hehe Vabbè, dopo avere attraversato qualche strada e essere passati col rosso ...nulla di che, dopotutto siamo in bici. :P siamo arrivati al parco Tingui-Qui possiamo prendercela comoda e goderci la vista, tanto io c'ho il tuo culo davanti a me da guardare (sì, l'ho detto :P) O forse pensavi che ci mettevamo in fila indiana a causa delle strette piste ciclabili? Alla fine di questa, giriamo a sinistra ed eccoci nel parco Barigui! Entriamo da una sorta di passaggio segreto e proseguiamo ammirando il paesaggioalìarboreto perché fa rima. Non ci vuole molto perché i primi capibara siano avvistati dalla mia ragazza :P Adesso possiamo fare una pausa per scattare delle foto. Comunque, siamo abituati a fare i turisti ... Dopo aver fatto un giretto nel parco, scegliamo un posto in cui sederci e passiamo il pomeriggio leggendo il nostro libro. A proposito, l'hai portato?-Ma certo! Eccolo! (dice Giadinha)-Che sollievo! The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of a number of comic-Gothic-horror movies and other named films on both the narrative structure, aesthetics and generic configuration of Jonathan Coe’s Number 11 and its representation of the social and political context. This state-of-the-nation novel, made up of a series of five interlinked novellas is structurally inspired by the archetypal British portmanteau horror film, Dead of Night. It not only adopts a form of postmodernist fragmentation but also evokes several horror B-movies, thus confirming Coe’s attachment to popular culture and obliquely reflecting upon the terrifying and haunted times we live in. In one of the stories, a character is haunted by the memory of a lost film, generating insatiable nostalgia and a longing for a comforting past untainted by the greed and horror of 21st-century British society. This paper will draw on the filmic references interspersed in Number 11 to demonstrate how they weave together the threads of the various narratives and illuminate some of the main themes.

Jonathan Coe is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed contemporary British writers. This comprehensive introduction places his work in clear historical and theoretical context, offering extensive readings of the author’s ten novels from The Accidental Woman to Expo 58, including the remarkable What a Carve Up!. The book explores Coe’s biography and his experimentations with narrative, genre and comedy, as well as his thematic preoccupations with history, memory, loss and nostalgia. Including a timeline of key dates and an interview with the author, it also offers an overview of the critical reception Coe’s work has provoked.

First published in 1994, Jonathan Coe's novel What a carve up!, on the one hand, deals with some of the most characteristic features of Postmodernism, such as the employment of multiple narrative styles, different perspectives, first-and third-person narrative voices, a highly fragmented timeline. On the other hand, it presents a socially engaged attitude that is generally not considered to be a distinctive trait of that period. Moreover, the character of Michael Owen and his development through the story can profitably be analyzed suggesting a correlation between his figure and the mythological one of Orpheus. Cosa intendiamo con umorismo, e in che misura possiamo parlare di umorismo, oggi? Il concetto che durante il modernismo Luigi Pirandello ha definito come capacità di saper esprimere il «sentimento del contrario» (1908) appare come requisito fondamentale per lo scrittore contemporaneo: uno strumento necessario a chi si adoperi a appresentare la società del soggetto scisso, retta da un’ideologia che si fonda e si costruisce sull’ambivalenza dei messaggi e sulla progressiva incapacità del pubblico medio di riuscire a decifrarli. In questo articolo, attraverso una lettura dei testi tratti da quella che ho individuato come fase maggiore dell’opera di Walter Siti  – i cinque romanzi dell’”autofiction”: Scuola di nudo (1994), Un dolore normale (1997), Troppi paradisi (2006), Resistere non serve a niente (2012), Exit Strategy (2014) – in comparazione con alcuni scrittori a lui contemporanei, ossia Philip Roth, Don DeLillo e Jonathan Coe, nonché attraverso il recupero della lezione umoristica pasoliniana, è mia intenzione ragionare su una possibile teorizzazione di un umorismo ipermoderno, che, paradossalmente, ha conservato le caratteristiche dell’umorismo così come è stato trasmesso dal modernismo, tuttavia anteponendole alla capacità di provocare il riso.
