Alternative Media

La interactividad y el multimedia son dos de los pilares fundamentales del periodismo digital, junto a la hipertextualidad. Dado su carácter relativamente incipiente, analizamos empíricamente el uso en cabeceras internacionales. En este artículo se recogen los resultados de incorporación de interactividad (proporción de piezas en las que hay interactividad mediante comentarios en el foro, piezas con interactividad simétrica o asimétrica) en los periódicos The Sun (Reino Unido), Le Monde (Francia), The New York Times (Estados Unidos de América) y La Vanguardia (España). En la misma muestra se han recogido las inclusiones multimedia (audio, video, audiovisual). Se percibe un uso intenso de la interactividad en el foro, un uso testimonial de la interactividad simétrica y asimétrica y una inclusión moderada de los recursos multimedia analizados. この「アメリカの市民メディア2010」調査報告書は、2010年9月13日～9月17日にかけて、アメリカのワシントンDCとニューヨークにある“市民メディア”関連団体を、日本でそれぞれ市民メディアの領域に関わってきた下記のメンバーが、共同で訪問調査した結果の概要である。
激変する情報・メディア環境を背景に、既存のマスメディアの経営はきわめてきびしくなっており、アメリカでは巨大通信企業の急激な繁殖とは裏腹に新聞社の倒産が相次ぎ、他方パブリック・アクセス（ケーブルテレビでの市民放送局）も危機に立っていると報じられている。日本でも政府やマスメディアの情報の信頼性がゆらぎはじめ、一般市民や地域住民のニーズに応えられなくなっていきている。市民・住民・NPOは、ウェブサイト、ブログ、ツイッター、SNS、ユーチューブなどでさかんに発信しはじめている。
そうした中で、公共的な共同空間をもつ市民メディア（コミュニティメディア、オルタナティブメディア）の役割が期待されつつも、なかなか大きく広がっていかない。政権交代はあったものの、メディア政策は一向に変わらないという状況の中で、参加メンバーの共通の問題意識は、メディア民主主義やパブリック・アクセスの“先進地”であったアメリカの市民メディアの現在/未来を率直に知りたい、ということであった。具体的には以下を想定して、短い日程での調査候補を絞っていった。

（2） ケーブル以外の独立系/市民メディアの理念や活動実態、今後の課題

Scope of freedom of speech and expression in social media is an overarching debated issue that raises concern in Oman. Growth in the number of social media users in Oman recently made it possible for alternative media messages to engage in political discussions, increasing their opportunities of political expression and creating public opinions. This paper argues that, despite government’s consolidated control of media outlets, social media and Facebook in particular have increasingly provided an arena for Omanis not only in exercising their right in expressing ‘political opinions’, but also in providing space for ‘alternative journalism ’ in counter response to government-controlled media. We argue that the continued growth of the Internet, both as a form of mainstream media and as a tool for organizing democratic social interactions, requires that Internet politics be retheorized from a standpoint that is both critical and reconstructive. While we undertake an approach that is critical of corporate forms and hegemonic uses of the Internet, we advocate for new software developments such as blogs and trace the oppositional deployments of the Internet made by a wide variety of groups in the cause of progressive cultural and political struggle. Radio is an old medium that seems to struggle to renew itself. With the switchover from analogue to digital and the necessity to keep up with consumer demand and expectations, radio has been regularly deemed to be obsolete. Radio as a primetime media died, but radio also morphed into something else. During the French occupy movement Nuit Debout in April 2016, people who were walking around Place de la République-the Parisian heart of the protest-might have been surprised to discover Radio Debout ("radio stand up"). Why one should contribute to such a radio when Internet and social networks prevail? With the idea that micro-radio broadcasting holds the potential to empower ordinary people at the local community level, radio-activism is tinkering its way back against the overriding force of computer-mediated technologies. Commercial social media (CSM) play a vital role in support of community outreach and engagement. Despite the apparent benefits of CSM, its widespread use raises important concerns about privacy and surveillance, limits on innovation, and data residency for the organizations that increasingly rely on them. This chapter will consider these concerns in relation to an international research collaboration involving technology stewardship training. Technology stewardship is an approach adapted from the communities of practice literature intended to promote effective use of digital ICTs for engagement. The program currently focuses on using commercial social media platforms for introductory capacity building, but this chapter will suggest important reasons to assist them in exploring non-commercial alternative social media (ASM) platforms. The chapter describes how the technology stewardship model offers a pathway for communities of practice interested in adopting ASM for outreach and engagement.

This paper thinks through just what makes alterative media alterative. Specifically, it asks whether it is worth considering the broader sphere of radical alterative content that exists online or otherwise outside of networks of top-down control (such as the networks of creators and readers of slash fiction) as important and neglected parts of the alternative media movement.

More than 850 million people in developing countries are excluded from a wide range of information and knowledge, with the rural poor in particular remaining isolated from both traditional media and new information and communication technologies, which would improve their livelihoods and development pattern (FAO, 2001).Considering the sociocultural and geographical structure of rural, remote people community radio has been found more effective and inclusive medium to provide equitable information and knowledge among the masses. El tramado social en Perú se ha ido construyendo a través de constantes corrientes migratorias que ha llevado a los grupos rurales buscar mejores condiciones de vida (educación, salud y trabajo), generando una gran aglutinación en la ciudad y un deseo persistente en mantener sus patrones culturales, a pesar que estas se han visto expuestas al relato de la modernidad que narra la ciudad, por lo que se ha tenido que enfrentar a ella desde la construcción de la diversidad.
Esta investigación, busca a través del uso práctico de los medios de comunicación, en especial de la radio, comprender este proceso integrador de los nuevos grupos dentro del relato ciudadano frente a los hegemónicos, con la finalidad de brindar un escenario articulado y diverso, el cual permita integrar el componente de multiculturalidad al discurso de la modernidad, necesario en la estabilidad de la sociedad.
Bajo esta perspectiva y como unidad de análisis, la Comunidad Shipiba de Cantagallo, los grupos de migrantes pueden experimentar cómo la apertura de un medio de comunicación alternativo puede brindar y facilitar la articulación social, hacia un nuevo escenario comunicativo que permita dar vigencia al relato construido por un grupo no hegemónico.

ABSTRACT
On 6 April 2009 an earthquake occurred in L’Aquila, a small city in the centre of Italy, causing the death of more than 300 people. This tragic event led to a prompt increase in the adoption and use of Internet technologies by local citizens who appropriated social media platforms in order to reconstruct online the offline spaces of socialisation which had been damaged or destroyed by the quake. A year after the tragedy, to protest against the Italian State’s failure to remove the debris from the historical city centre, some citizens decided to flee into the streets with wheelbarrows and autonomously remove the rubble: a new movement later labelled as “The People of the Wheelbarrows” (“PoW”) emerged. These activists aimed at involving the citizenship in the decision processes regarding L’Aquila’s reconstruction, in contrast to the government’s top-down strategies, and at making the public aware of the issue of the debris removal and the urgent need for the historical centre’s re-opening and reconstruction. This paper explores the Internet-related practices of the actors of the PoW. Our findings highlight the existence of an integrated system of local protest characterised by a complex communication ecology based on crossovers between traditional media and multiple digital technologies, and articulated between the online and the offline dimensions.

This research explores the present status of the CR in India in the initial sections. But the main focus has been given on the innovative practices of the community radios scattered in nook and corner of the country. Emphasis has also given to classify the possible innovations in the sector and a list of areas on innovation has been identified. The aim of the paper is to introduce larp (short for live action roleplay) as an alternative form of medium. I argue that larping has grown into a quite specific medium with a unique combination of characteristics; however, it is still on the borders of game, improvised drama, artistic happening and experience education. I show how participants are encouraged to escape reality, explore it, how they are exposed to it or even how they could change it. Finally, I focus on the possibilities and limitations of larping as a participatory medium. I conclude that larp should not be a widespread medium, although it is very effective in affecting its selected audience.

L'usage des « réseaux sociaux » par des mouvements protestataires récents (du « Printemps arabe » aux « Indignados ») a suscité un déferlement d'analyses et de commentaires soulignant les vertus intrinsèquement démocratiques des « nouvelles technologies de l'information et de la communication ». La thèse de la « démocratisation 2.0. » souffre cependant d'un déterminisme technologique qui va généralement de pair avec un oubli des conditions sociales et historiques de possibilité de ces pratiques militantes.
L'étude de Benjamin Ferron propose de revenir sur les stratégies politiques et médiatiques d'un réseau transnational de militants, le zapatisme mexicain, souvent considéré, après son émergence en 1994, comme le principal initiateur des mobilisations altermondialistes qui ont marqué les années 1990 et 2000. L'auteur compare les stratégies déployées par les militants de ce réseau pour construire publiquement une cause « globale » centrée sur la lutte contre la mondialisation néolibérale et, progressivement, le problème de la démocratisation des médias au Mexique et dans le monde. Comment les acteurs du réseau zapatiste sont-ils parvenus à construire et diffuser un discours de lutte contre le néolibéralisme auprès de publics géographiquement et politiquement très hétérogènes qui les ont érigés en emblème de « l'autre mondialisation » ? Comment et pourquoi la question des médias a-t-elle été inscrite dans l'agenda politique de nombre d'organisations militantes qui le composent, au point de constituer la principale activité d'une partie d'entre elles ?
Optant pour une sociologie constructiviste des problèmes publics, l'étude rend compte au plus près des mécanismes de la circulation transnationale du zapatisme et de ses acteurs. Elle montre que la convergence partielle des cadres de mobilisation collective est le produit d’une série de choix tactiques et de contraintes intériorisées favorisant, chez les militants et sympathisants de l'Armée Zapatiste de Libération Nationale (EZLN), la production de discours contestataires relativement indépendants de leurs conditions sociales de production.

Some front matter including table of contents from a rough draft of an anthology with the working title "Outsight Anthology - 25 Years of Music Journalism". This is an anthology of a quarter century of music journalism in print, on the web, and on air. Starting in 1989 with music journalism in Detroit's Jam Rag, then a self-syndicated column of the alternative press, this morphed into Outsight Radio Hours: New & non-mainstream music with artist interviews. A new, 2-hour episode was produced weekly from the late 90s until July, 2014.

I am closing in on a first draft of my book project and I plan to start sending out feelers today, so I hope to get some good feedback, ideas. I began with about 700 items. Now, 100% have been transcribed and all but 41 (about one half of one percent) and proofed, refined, and placed in the lager work. It takes me between an hour or two per interview to do that final step. So, I am about eighty hours of work away from a first draft. This should happen some time by the end of year. (I work mostly on Sundays and occasional evenings.)

The working draft is already closing in on eight thousand(!) pages, so I that to be about the length of the finished work. What do to with it!

I am looking for suggestions. One idea is to find some publisher to put out an extremely abridged version with something like a PDF of the entire work available as a download to purchasers. Another idea is to schedule out blog posts of one item per day over a couple of years.

This article contributes to the emergent literature on the use of social media at advocacy organizations. Much of this existing literature focuses on these organizations’ production of social media information; this article, however, explores the complementary and relatively unexamined consumption of social media information that can form part of advocacy work. By drawing parallels between journalism and advocacy, the article develops two theoretical models of how advocacy organizations evaluate social media information as part of this consumption. These models differ according to the information values at their cores and according to how these values are evaluated in practice; correspondingly, the models interact differently with social media’s affordances. The key information value for the evidence model is the veracity of the information’s metadata, and this is largely evaluated through a time-intensive verification process requiring corroboration and drawing on human expertise. In contrast, the key information value pertaining to the engagement model is participation, which is evaluated by measuring the volume of participants in the information’s production and transmission. The affordances of social media are often hindrances for the evidence model, because they can make metadata more difficult to verify. In contrast, the engagement model capitalizes on social media affordances, because these affordances facilitate participation as well as the evaluation of participation volume using digital analytics. In addition to shedding light on approaches to social media information evaluation at advocacy organizations, this article urges researchers and practitioners to be alive to related barriers to pluralism as they study and use these approaches.

Debate over consumer trust in traditional media has intensified due to the appearance of networked social movements, particularly considering media coverage of the protests, the emergence of alternative media and social media as information sources. A survey was created for this study to provide insight into the association between media exposure, trust and political participation in networked social movements, specifically among 15M Movement activists. Data is presented to show to what extent to 15M activists view traditional and alternative media as trustworthy. The article also looks at the causes of
trust and mistrust in those media.

Results indicate that politically-interested online users placed more trust in information disseminated by alternative media than by conventional media. Furthermore, exposure to social media is associated with trust in media, while age and gender are not. This means that the increased use of alternative and social media involves a decreased trust in information provided by traditional media. Instead, those who do not use social media and those who use traditional media are those who trusted mass media the most.

Over recent decades, the consolidation of the Internet as an important source of information (Pew Research Center, 2011) has caused a change in the information-seeking behaviour of the population in general and of young people in particular. Nowadays, young people consult traditional media less often, especially in their analogue format. As a result, getting informed has become a social event which is also transmedia and decentralized. The information is spread through multiple platforms, overflowing conventional media (Williams
and Delli Carpini, 2011). These new trends imply that work within traditional newsrooms is being challenged and questioned by a whole new era of citizen-journalists (Compton and Benedetti, 2010) and this contributes to the appearance of new actors on the information stage. Among these are the various nodes of the networked social movements (Castells, 2012) that have originated since 2009 such as Occupy in the United States, the uprisings in the Middle East and North African countries or the 15M Movement in Spain, among others. These movements are characterized by the occupation of public space and the use of social media to disseminate political information and to mobilize citizens.

Stefania Milan’s book is about the interaction between social movements and how they use media technologies. Her main premise is that communication technologies are instrumental in giving social movements a voice, and that beyond this, they are part of the impact of the social movements and they affect the way these movements operate. She calls the real life use of media in social movement activism “Emancipatory Communication Practices,” which she treats as a function of technological development that in return changes the political culture

Many expressions have also been generated by the conceptual work of alternative media practitioners, often at the crossroads between the field of progressive academia and radical social movement milieus. For instance, terms like "autonomous media" (Langlois and Dubois 2005), "tactical media", (Garcia and Lovink 1997), and "media sociali" (Chainworkers 2006) were first elaborated and circulated within the activist field, both online and offline, and testify once more to the importance of reflexive practices for the production of critical knowledge on the media environment and on its mechanisms.

Neste artigo buscamos responder o que é, afinal, Jornalismo de Guerrilha. Empreendemos uma revisão de literatura evidenciando definições e dimensões ao mesmo tempo complementares e contraditórias para tal noção. Colocamos à prova nossa compreensão com a análise do fenômeno do Mídia Ninja, observando mais especificamente suas transmissões simultâneas, para verificar como o coletivo desenvolve suas formas de atuação e se ele se enquadra ou não em tal nos aspectos que caracterizam tal noção conceitual. Ao final, tecemos considerações que sinalizam o caráter exploratório da apreciação frente ao fenômeno observado e a complexidade em delimitar o conceito pretendido.

This article examines five common misunderstandings about case-study research: (a) theoretical knowledge is more valuable than practical knowledge; (b) one cannot generalize from a single case, therefore, the single-case study cannot contribute to scientific development; (c) the case study is most useful for generating hypotheses, whereas other methods are more suitable for hypotheses testing and theory building; (d) the case study contains a bias toward verification; and (e) it is often difficult to summarize specific case studies. This article explains and corrects these misunderstandings one by one and concludes with the Kuhnian insight that a scientific discipline without a large number of thoroughly executed case studies is a discipline without systematic production of exemplars, and a discipline without exemplars is an ineffective one. Social science may be strengthened by the execution of a greater number of good case studies.

This book examines unintended participatory cultures and media surrounding the American televangelists Robert Tilton and Tammy Faye Bakker-Messner. It brings to light heavily ironic fan followings; print, audio, and video projects; public-access television parodies; and other comedic participatory practices associated with these controversial preachers from the 1980s onwards. For Tilton’s ministry, some of these activities and artifacts would prove irksome and even threatening, particularly an analog video remix turned online viral sensation. In contrast, Bakker-Messner’s “campy” fans – gay men attracted to her “ludicrous tragedy” – would provide her unexpected opportunities for career rehabilitation.

Denis J. Bekkering challenges “supply-side” religious economy and branding approaches, suggestions of novelty in religion and “new” media studies, and the emphasis on sincere devotion in research on religion and fandom. He also highlights how everyday individuals have long participated in public negotiations of Christian authenticity through tongue-in-cheek play with purported religious “fakes.”

This study investigates the role of Turkish commercial local radio in the construction of youth community in the city of Şanlıurfa, which is located in the poor rural southeastern region near the Syrian border. Through in-depth interviews with radio listeners and analysis of their interactions via radio, this paper also examines young people’s attempts to overcome traditional restrictions and social norms through talk radio. By doing so, this study aims to highlight the social role of radio, which is often underestimated in media studies (Scannell 1996), and to challenge Western-centric scholarship on talk radio, which ignores talk radio’s role in community formation. By drawing from Downing’s concept of ‘radical media’, Atton’s definition of ‘alternative media’, and Couldry’s theorization of the ‘symbolic hierarchy of media power,’ this study will discuss why some local commercial stations in Şanlıurfa function as alternative media for the Turkish youth and how they cross the boundary between the ‘media’ and ‘ordinary’ worlds to create a space for themselves.

The socialist and feminist novelist Angela Carter (1940-1992) is one of the most acclaimed late-Twentieth Century English writers, famous for short stories such as The Bloody Chamber and novels such as Nights at the Circus and Wise Children.  This book investigates Angela Carter’s life and work in the West Country, where she lived in Clifton, Bristol (1961-1969) and Walcot, Bath (1973-1976).

The purpose of this book is two-fold. First, it is to discover and reveal some of Angela Carter’s non-literary influences during her formative years as a writer in the West Country. Second, its primary intention is to take her location in 1960’s Clifton, Bristol and 1970’s Walcot, Bath as a point of departure to explore the broader artistic, radical and experimental communities that flourished in those years.

Based on new oral-history interviews and primary sources, Angela Carter’s ‘Provincial Bohemia’ offers new perspectives on Angela Carter’s experience of alternative Bristol with its radical politics and creative arts scene, exploring its influence on the three novels set in the city Shadow Dance (1966), Several Perspectives (1968) and Love (1971).

This chapter helps to fill gaps in our knowledge of the relationships among right-wing activists, conservative media, and alternative journalism. The vast majority of research on alternative and activist media, especially in the U.S., has to date assumed a progressive orientation and focused on liberal sources, messages and audiences. By contrast, this paper revisits the literature to illuminate how the field has variously examined and neglected the ideas, practices and publics of right-wing media users. It reports a new analysis of survey data revealing both similarities and divergences between conservative and progressive audiences in regards to their attitudes toward alternative and mainstream media—in particular, toward the individual and structural biases of professional journalism. These findings will help scholars, journalists and other actors to better understand, theorize, and study the role of alternative media users in mainstream political communication. It also suggests several points of departure for future work on alternative journalism, partisan rhetorical strategies, media criticism, and public engagement.
