THE CULT OF DIONYSOS IN ASIA MINOR
IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL AGE

Making his presence, which can be traced long before the Archaic Age, deeply felt mainly in Hellas, Asia Minor and then in Rome throughout the ancient world, Dionysos, depending on the place and time, appears before us sometimes as a god of grape-wine, sometimes as a god of theatre and acting arts and sometimes as a religious power shaped according to the local needs, however, he has generally been a god of nature representing the fertility and abundance. According to the inscriptions, Dionysos was mentioned with many epithetons in Asia Minor of the Roman Imperial Age, and that he was a god of nature bringing abundance-fertility and his many other features can be observed by these epithetons. Depending on the long stated customs, the cult of Dionysos in Asia Minor survived throughout the Roman Imperial Age (especially in the II-III. Century A.D. with festivals, cult associations and structuring, artists (musicians, players, dancers) that served his cult. According to the written records, festivals such as Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris organized in the name of Dionysos were celebrated. Dance, music and play competitions were made in these festivals maintained by the rich citizens or directors and not commonly known cult rituals were performed. Besides the associations of synodos artists called by different names in different times in the large cities of the west, cult associations broad in scope such as thiasos, speira or cult member groups with large audience in various names were active both in worshipping and these festivals. In order to achieve this, undoubtedly, both artist associations and cult associations had to have a well organized governing structure. Names were given to the cult members according to the task taken. These members also had to pay a membership fee in order to be a member or to continue to be one. Actually, these fees were as important as the epimeletes in the mainta-nance of these associations. In addition, they were supported both mate-rially and spiritually by the Roman emperors or provincial governors. Although the paganic religious activities in the lands of Asia Minor under the control of Rome were left to the free will of the cities, they would not be strong without the respect shown for the cults of the emperors, emperor and the Roman goddess (Dea Roma). The worshipping of Dionysos could only develop with the close relations with the emperors and the Roman Empire. Correspondingly, supporting a paganic cult significant for the people, the Roman Empire gained the sympathy of the people and also kept them loyal to Rome. The deification of the Roman emperors began with General Marcus Antonius, who was wellcomed as “New Dionysos” on his arrival to Ephesos, and continued in the Roman Imperial Age. During this period the associations in Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias and Sardeis characterised Emperor Hadrianus, Commodus and Caracalla by this epitheton. Thus, they deified them by considering them equal with Dionysos. Dionysos also had common worship with imperial or Dea Roma cult besides the common paganic worship of Zeus and Dēmētēr. Like all other paganic religions, the cult of Dionysos broke down with the strengthening Christianity with which it had opposite doctrines and finally with the acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of the state. However, many features of the Dionysos cult continued to exist in Asia Minor both in Christian features and local cultures and traditions. Today it still continues this effect.

Arkaik Çağ’dan çok daha eskilere götürebildiğimiz varlığını, coğrafi olarak başta Hellas, Küçükasya ve sonraları Roma olmak üzere tüm Antik Çağ coğrafyasında etkin bir şekilde hissettiren Dionysos, yer ve zaman farkına bağlı olarak, bazı yerlerde üzüm-şarap tanrısı, bazılarında tiyatro ve sahne sanatlarının tanrısı, bazılarında ise yerel ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda şekillendirilmiş dinsel bir güç olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Ama genel olarak bereket ve bolluğu temsil eden bir doğa tanrısı kimliğine sahip olmuştur. Yazıtlardan anlaşıldığına göre Roma İmparatorluk Çağı Küçükasyası’ nda birçok epitheton ile anılan Dionysos’un, bolluk-bereket getiren bir doğa tanrısı olduğu ve diğer başka özellikleri gene bu epitheton’larından anlaşılmaktadır. Küçükasya’daki Dionysos kültü Roma İmparatorluk Çağı boyunca (bilhassa M.S. II-III. yüzyılarda), öncesinden gelen bir geleneğe bağlı olarak şenlikleri, kült dernekleri ve yapılanması, kültüne hizmet eden sanatçıları (müzisyenler, oyuncular, dansçılar) ile varlığını sürdürmüştür. Yazılı belgelerden bu dönemde büyük ve zengin kentlerde hâlâ Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris gibi Dionysos adına tertiplenen şenliklerin kutlandığını; masrafları, epimeletes olarak bildiğimiz kentin zengin vatandaşları ya da yöneticileri tarafından karşılanan bu şenliklerde külte ilişkin dans, müzik ve oyun yarışmaların yapıldığını ve herkesçe bilinmeyen kült ritüellerinin uygulandığını öğrenmekteyiz. Bilhassa batı kesimlerdeki büyük kentlerdeki, farklı dönemlerde farklı isimlerle anılan synodos sanatçı derneklerinin yanında thiasos, speira gibi daha geniş kapsamlı kült dernekleri ya da en yaygını mystai olan çeşitli adlar altında toplanan geniş kitleli kült üye grupları hem tapınımda, hem de bu şenliklerde aktif olmuşlardır. Şüphesiz ki bunu gerçekleştirebilmek adına gerek sanatçı dernekleri gerekse kült dernekleri, iyi organize olmuş bir idari yapılanmaya sahip olmak durumundaydı. Bu derneklerde üstlendikleri görevlere göre adlandırılan kült üyelerinin, üye olabilmeleri veya üyeliklerini sürdü-rebilmeleri için ödemek zorunda oldukları aidatlar da vardı. Esasen bu derneklerin finansmanının karşılanmasında bu aidatlar, en az epimeletes’ ler kadar önemliydi. Ayrıca Roma imparatorlarının ya da eyalet yöneticilerinin hem manevi hem de maddi desteğini alıyorlardı. Zira bu dönemde Roma egemenliği altında bulunan Küçükasya topraklarındaki pagan dinsel yaşam her ne kadar kentlerin özgür iradesine bırakılmışsa da, imparatorlara, imparator ve Roma Tanrıçası (Dea Roma) kültüne gösterilen saygı olmaksızın güçlü kalamazdı. Küçükasya Dionysos tapınımı da, tamamıyla imparatorlar ve Roma İmparatorluğu ile kurulan güçlü bağlar sayesinde gelişebilmiştir. Bununla paralel olarak da Roma İmparatorluğu, halk için önemli olan pagan bir kültü destekleyerek, hem halkın sempatisini kazanmakta, hem de böylece onların Roma’ya olan bağlılığını sürdürmek amacını gütmekteydi. General Marcus Antonius’un Ephesos’a gelişinde “Yeni Dionysos” olarak karşılanmasıyla başlayan Romalı devlet adamlarını tanrılaştırma geleneği, Roma İmparatorluk Çağı’nda da sürmüş; bu dönemde özellikle Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias ve Sardeis’teki dernekler, İmparator Hadrianus, Commodus ve Caracalla’yı bu sıfatla nitelendirmişler, böylece onları Dionysos ile bir tutarak tanrılaştırmışlardır. On the basis of archaeological, numismatic, and (mainly) epigraphic attestations, B.Öztürk,Roma imparatorluk çağı Küçükasaysı’nda Dionysos kültü (Istanbul 2010), studies the cult ofΔιόνυσος in Roman Asia Minor. After general remarks about the god, he presents a geographically arranged catalogue of the relevant inscriptions with brief comments (ph. of some texts). On 196-209, Ö. provides a register with explanations of the most important terms found in the inscriptions, and on 210/211 a list of epithets.

Manisa ili sınırlarında yer alan Aigai, Antik Dönemde Aspordene, günümüzde Yunt Dağı olarak isimlendirilen dağ silsilesindeki Gün Dağı üzerinde kurulmuştur. Yunt Dağı idari açıdan Manisa ve İzmir il sınırları içinde yer almaktadır. Toplam yüz ölçümü 3.521,70 km² olan bu alan kuzeyde Bakırçay (antik Kaikos), güneyde Gediz (antik Hermos) nehirleri, doğuda Kırkağaç ve Akhisar ovaları ile batıda Çandarlı Körfezi ile sınırlanmıştır. Yüksekliği 500-1000 m. arasında değişen tepeler ve bu tepeler arasındaki geniş düzlüklerden oluşan, Yunt Dağı’nın en yüksek noktası 1076 m.’de yer almaktadır

A case is made in recent books by Lascelles and Crowe that Homer’s Trojan War setting was not at Schleimann’s Hisarlik site of King Priam’s Ilium, but at Pergamon. We review their case, the places frequented by Homer as possible clues, and the Iliad’s revision as compiled and promoted by Athens and followed by Alexander the Great and the Romans. We then focus on numismatic evidence in the alternative regions of Northwest Anatolia (NWA) and Central West Anatolia (CWA). NWA includes the regions known as Troas, North Mysia, Hellespontic Thrace with nearby islands, and Bithynia. CWA regions include South Mysia with nearby islands, Aeolis, Ionia, Lydia, and Phrygia, as well as Cilician expatriate lands. We find that NWA coins are rich in early Iliadic mythology, indicating that Ilium was a Trojan War setting. However, we also find indications that the war was more extensive than commonly envisioned. It was led in CWA by King Telephus, who spearheaded an East versus West world war whose campaigns ended at Ilium.

Aigai antik kenti, Manisa İli Merkez İlçe’ye bağlı Yunddağı Köseler Köyü’nün 2 km. güneyindeki Gün Dağı’nın üzerinde yer almaktadır. Aigai, güney ucunda birleşen Pythikos ile onun kolu olan Setlik Deresi’nin ortasında bir yarımada gibi uzanan bir tepe ve onun kuzey rüzgârına kapalı batı ve güney yamaçları üzerine konuşlanmıştır. Antik kent, adına antik çağda Aspordene, günümüzde ise Yund Dağı adı verilen volkanik kayalıklarda hayvancılık, özellikle kente adını veren keçi yetiştiriciliği, yer yer küçük ovacıklarda birikmiş verimsiz toprakta tarım yaparak yaşamlarını sürdürenlerin kurduğu bir dağ kentidir. The paper presents the data from a cistern found by the Italian Archaeological Mission on the northern slope of the south hill of Kyme, immediately to the North of a late-classical house in use throughout the Hellenistic period. The cistern bult is the first half of the third century BC, was filled with material, vessels of common use, tableware, cooking pots, amphoras and fine pottery attested in Athens and in other places of Greece and Asia Minor, from the second century BC until the beginnings of the first century AD. A small group of materials dating in the decades after the earthquake that in 17 AD destroyed Kyme and other towns on the Aegean coast suggests that, in this place, the removal of the debris was not immediate. Probably, only after the middle of the first century the rubble of the destroyed houses were partially thrown away in the cistern and the space around it was levelled for the construction of a large peristyle domus.

Herodotus names Aigai among the twelve cities that Aiolians established in the Aiolis region. Although the historians in the antiquity claimed that the Aiolian migrations to the area began in the beginning of the twelfth century BC, the current data obtained from the archaeological excavations indicate a date only as far back as the first half of the seventh century BC for the establishment of Aigai. According to Polybius' narration, Aigai suffered extensive damage during a battle between Prusias the second, the King of Bithynia and Attalos the second (one fifty-six – one fifty-four BC). In fulfillment of the post-war treaty Prusias the second was forced to pay one hundered talents to the cities that he damaged. Following this period, Aigai became an attractive economical and political center probably with the support that it received from the Kingdom of Pergamon and it was adorned with glamorous structures, such as the theater, bouleterion and the agora. It is evident that Aigai was an economically powerful city throughout the Hellenistic period. It is known that the city had a stronghold in the region in textile weaving and wool production.

Herodotos, Aigai’yi Aioller’in Aiolis Bölgesi’nde kurduğu 12 kent arasında saymaktadır. Antik yazarlar Aiollerin bölgeye gelişlerinin M.Ö. 1100 tarihlerinde başladığını ileri sürseler de, kazı sonuçları şimdilik kentin kuruluşunun M.Ö. 7. yüzyılın ilk yarısından daha erkene gitmediğini göstermektedir. Polybius’un aktarımına göre, Bithynia kralı Prusias II ile Attalos II arasında gerçekleşen bir savaşta Aigai ciddi bir şekilde tahrip edilmiştir (M.Ö. 156-154). Prusias II, savaş sonrasında yapılan barış antlaşması gereğince, tahrip ettiği kentlere 100 talent ödemek zorunda bırakılmıştır. Kent bu tarihten itibaren, muhtemelen Pergamon Krallığı’nın da desteğiyle, bölgede ekonomik ve kültürel bir çekim merkezi olmuş, Tiyatro, Kent Meclisi Binası (Bouleuterion) ve Agora gibi görkemli yapılarla donatılmıştır. Aigai’nin Hellenistik Dönem boyunca ekonomik açıdan güçlü bir kent olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Kentin dokumacılıkta ve yün üretiminde bölgede en önemli merkez olduğu bilinmektedir.

Earlier studies considered the minting of silver in western Asia Minor cities (5th to early 4th century) as controlled by Athens or the Persian King, who would have been involved on different levels in the coin issues (authorisation for minting, coin types, weight standard). The new attribution to Elaea (Aeolis) of a silver coin so far assigned to Tegea (Arcadia) allows the identification of the denominations and weight standards used at the Aeolian city in the 5th to the 4th century. On this basis, a comparative study with the early silver coinage of Pergamum shows that both cities accorded their silver issues through compatible weight-standards and ultimately influenced those of other cities in the Caicus Valley. Even if the Elaean and Pergamene early silver coinages may have been in use as both cities were controlled by two opposing empires, their limited volume and small range of denominations suggest that they were independent of Athenian or Persian involvement and had only local significance.

Antik kaynakların aktardığı verilere göre Aiol Göç hareketi MÖ 1100 yıllarından sonra başlamıştır. 2004 yılından beri sürdürülen arkeolojik araştırmalar Aigai’nin MÖ 8. yüzyılın son çeyreği ile 7. yüzyılın ilk çeyreği arasında bir yerde kurulduğunu göstermektedir. Erken dönem yerleşimi, Geç Geometrik Dönem karakterli seramik buluntular, kent içinde yer yer tespit edilen tabakalar ve nekropolisde açığa çıkarılan mezarlar sayesinde bilinmektedir. Kent kurulduğu tarihten, terk edildiği MS 3. yüzyılın üçüncü çeyreğine kadar polis karakterini korumuş, Hellenistik Dönem ile birlikte yerleşim alanı büyümüş ve etrafını çeviren sur sistemi genişletilmiştir.  MÖ 156-154 yıllarında, II. Prusias tahribatı ardından kent yeniden imar edilmiştir. Bu dönemde Pergamon Krallığı’nın da yardımları ile Bouleuterion, Agora, Gymnaison, Tiyatro ve Athena Kutsal Alanı yeniden inşa edilmiştir. Kent planlamasında, mimaride, heykeltıraşlık eserlerinde ve seramikte Pergamon etkisi çok açık bir şekilde kendisini göstermektedir. MS 17 yılında gerçekleşen ve Batı Anadolu’da büyük bir yıkıma neden olan depremde Aigai yerle bir olmuştur. Aigai ve yıkıma uğrayan diğer 12 kentin yaralarını Roma İmparatoru Tiberius sarmış, kentlere ciddi yardımlarda bulunmuştur. Kent Roma Dönemi’nde, Hellenistik Dönem’deki önemini kaybetmiş, hayvansal ekonomiye bağlı nüfusa sahip bir Roma kenti profiline bürünmüştür. İ.S. 267 yılında sayıları 320.000’ni bulan bir Got kavmi olan Heruliiler Küçük Asya’nın batı kıyıları boyunca ilerleyerek kıyıdaki birçok yerleşimi yağmalamışlardır. Yaklaşan Heruli tehlikesinin haberini önceden alan Aigai halkı, kamusal yapılar da dâhil olmak üzere kentteki binaların kapılarını duvar örerek kapatmış ve kenti terk etmiştir. Kentte yerleşim tekrar MS 12. yüzyıl sonlarında başlamıştır. Bu kısa süreli iskan sırasında, kentte küçük bir kilise inşa edilmiş ve kentteki kamu yapılarının tamamına yakını yıkılarak, kurşunları toplanmıştır.

Aigai is one of the important centers in Hellenistic Era. Archaeological excavations present a small Byzantine settlement, 12-13th centuries. This article describes a small Byzantine hoard of 22 coins, which was found in 2007 excavation season. They consist of scyphate (cup-shaped) bronze coins known as trachy, and these belong to Byzantine emperors I. Manuel, II. Isaakios, III. Alexios, Nikeia emperor I. Theodoros and Latin emperors (or Latin imitation).

Aigai, Hellenistik Dönem’in önemli merkezlerinden birisidir. Kentteki kazılar İ.S. 12-13. yüzyıllara ait küçük bir Bizans yerleşimine ait veriler sunmuştur. Bu makalede, kentte 2007 yılı kazı sezonunda ele geçen ve yirmi iki sikkeden oluşan küçük bir Bizans definesi ele alınmıştır. Bronz görünümlü, çukur Bizans da denen trachylerden oluşan define, Bizans imparatorları I. Manuel, II. İsaakios, III. Aleksios, Nikeia imparatoru I. Theodoros ve Latin Hükümdarları sikkeleri (ya da Latin taklitleri) olarak belirtilen sikke tiplerini içermektedir.

L’étude de certains aspects des institutions des cités d’Éolide (magistratures, proclamation des honneurs civiques) procure l’occasion d’examiner la pertinence de la notion de « koinè institutionnelle », à partir d’un observatoire régional. De ce point de vue, si les cités se conforment au modèle démocratique dominant, on constate l’existence de spécificité propres à l’Éolide, qui lui confèrent une unité certaine (nature des éponymes, rôle des stratèges), mais aussi le maintien de particularismes locaux dans chaque cité. Ceux-ci permettent de proposer l’attribution à des cités données (notamment Kymè) de décrets honorant des étrangers, retrouvés dans diverses cités du monde grec, et dont l’origine est discutée.

This paper is about the architectural terracottas from Larisa in Archaic period. Today, all findings from Larisa are in Istanbul and Stockholm. All of them have been reviewed. Here, some fragments are evaluated according to their usage areas in architecture with their technical details.

Earliest field studies on the settlement known as Larisa (Buruncuk) started in 1902 by a joint undertaking of Germany and Sweden. The excavations, focusing on the early stages of eastern Greek art, were initiated by Lennart Kjellberg and Johannes Boehlau and and continued with three final campaigns from 1932 to 34. Visual and written documents which are preserved in Turkish archives today shed light on the local (Ottoman and Turkish) perspectives in the course of the archaeological work at Larisa. Initially, the correspondances between Kjellberg-Boehlau and the museum directors in Istanbul shows bureaucratic process proceeded in a formal-but-personal style. The appointment of local commissars and their reports become apparent as a further topic of the background of excavations and researches. The transportation and registration of finds as well as the analyses of the objects in the museum followed accurately the rules of Turkish bureaucracy. Major publications on Larisa in three volumes can certainly be considered as a result of the collaborative efforts of all Swedish, German and Turkish parties involved.

Melanpagos, at the Southern Aiolis, is on a hill at the northern slopes of the Mount Amanara (Yamanlar Mount) overlooking the Hermus Valley. The primary purpose of this study, to the best of our current knowledge, is at least to introduce Melanpagos, which is a small mountain settlement located by beginning from Archaic Period until the end of Hellenistic Period to the world of archaeology by identifying and evaluating it. In the Archaic Period, the settlement having the characteristics of a sanctuary shaped around a small Aiol Temple was used as a fortress checking the roads getting to Smyrna from the north because of its strategic position in Achaemenid Period. In the various researches carried out in the region since the end of 19th century, boundary stones providing the location and exploration of Melanpagos were found. Those boundary stones show that a large part of the plateau belonged to Melanpagos in Hellenistic Period. As a result of examining the pottery on the settlement, it is understood that the settlement was abandoned in a period that we can accept as an early date for archaic age, in other words, by the second half of the 2nd century BC in which the Romans began to dominate Anatolia. The main purpose of this study is to introduce the Melanpagos settlement and remains that can be seen on the area to the world of Archaeology in detail by also considering the researches carried out in the area before. The boundary stones of Melanpagos and the remains showing that the settlement was used as a sanctuary in Archaic Period were served in the light of the former researchers. Melanpagos defensive walls belonging to various periods were handled for the first time and examined in detail by the help of comparative examples. Finally, some stone-cist graves of the settlement were shortly introduced.

The ancient city of Cyme, located in the Aliağa district of Izmir, was a member of the Aiolis Union and was founded by immigrants from Greece at the end of the second millennium BC. In three separate periods, excavations were carried out in the necropolis in the east of the city and a total of 343 graves were uncovered. These graves dating from the eighth century BC to the first century AD show the process of transition from the practice of cremation to inhumation and provide information about burial customs and grave types. Nine different grave types were used for burials.

Most of the 2nd millennium “grey ware”, also called Troy VI-VII grey ware, was theprevailing and characteristic pottery of the Troad. Blegen traced its origin to the greyware of north-western Anatolia at the end of the third millennium.
Towards the end of the second millennium, Troy was abandoned as a result of theinvasion that was a part of the larger movement that wrecked havoc on the easternMediterranean. The surviving inhabitants of Troy abandoned the city and sought refugeein the more defensible hilltops located farther inland. The refugees and their descendants
continued to produce “grey ware” until the end of the eighth century. At this timeAiolians from Lesbos crossed the sea and refounded Troy and colonized the Troad. It is interesting that after the eighth century Troy and a large number of sites in the Troad have yielded “grey ware” that was in use until the end of the Classical period.
This “grey ware” is similar to the “prehistoric grey ware” that it is very difficult to distinguish both, since. Shapes and forms appear to be direct continuity of the Late Bronze Age.
These observations shed important lights on the relationship between the Aiol Greeksand the native inhabitants of the Troad and permit some conjecture about their relationship. First, the producers of the “archaic grey ware” of the region were likely to be the descendants of the Bronze Age inhabitants of the Troad and Troy. Second, when the Aiolians arrived the Troad, they encountered people still using “grey ware”. Third, since several Greek settlements in the region have yielded the “grey ware” it appears that the Aioilan Greeks lived together with the native inhabitants of Troad and that this mingling appears to be a peaceful process. Finally, the non-Greek inhabitants of the Troad were Hellenized by the end of the Classical period as the use of “grey ware” ceased by that time.

There has been much discussion and uncertainty about the name and location of the city of Pordosilene (Pordoselene/Poroselene). There have been discussed thoroughly by Stauber, who studies cities in and around the Bay of Edremit, and he gives some suggestions. With this paper, attention will be given these problems again, and the coinage of the aforementioned city will be reconsidered in the light of new examples.

Lors de la saison de fouilles de 2011 a été découverte dans le sanctuaire de Claros la partie gauche d’une stèle sur laquelle sont gravés un décret d’Aigai et le décret réponse de Colophon-sur-Mer. Cette découverte permet de restituer l’intégralité de ces textes dont la partie droite a été publiée par Ph. Gauthier en 1999. On y apprend que les juges de Colophon sont venus à l’initiative du roi Attale Ier.

Antik kaynakların aktardığı verilere göre Aiol Göç hareketi MÖ 1100 yıllarından sonra başlamıştır. 2004 yılından beri sürdürülen arkeolojik araştırmalar Aigai’nin MÖ 8. yüzyılın son çeyreği ile 7. yüzyılın ilk çeyreği arasında bir yerde kurulduğunu göstermektedir. Erken dönem yerleşimi, Geç Geometrik Dönem karakterli seramik buluntular, kent içinde yer yer tespit edilen tabakalar ve nekropolisde açığa çıkarılan mezarlar sayesinde bilinmektedir. Kent kurulduğu tarihten, terk edildiği MS 3. yüzyılın üçüncü çeyreğine kadar polis karakterini korumuş, Hellenistik Dönem ile birlikte yerleşim alanı büyümüş ve etrafını çeviren sur sistemi genişletilmiştir.  MÖ 156-154 yıllarında, II. Prusias tahribatı ardından kent yeniden imar edilmiştir. Bu dönemde Pergamon Krallığı’nın da yardımları ile Bouleuterion, Agora, Gymnaison, Tiyatro ve Athena Kutsal Alanı yeniden inşa edilmiştir. Kent planlamasında, mimaride, heykeltıraşlık eserlerinde ve seramikte Pergamon etkisi çok açık bir şekilde kendisini göstermektedir. MS 17 yılında gerçekleşen ve Batı Anadolu’da büyük bir yıkıma neden olan depremde Aigai yerle bir olmuştur. Aigai ve yıkıma uğrayan diğer 12 kentin yaralarını Roma İmparatoru Tiberius sarmış, kentlere ciddi yardımlarda bulunmuştur. Kent Roma Dönemi’nde, Hellenistik Dönem’deki önemini kaybetmiş, hayvansal ekonomiye bağlı nüfusa sahip bir Roma kenti profiline bürünmüştür. İ.S. 267 yılında sayıları 320.000’ni bulan bir Got kavmi olan Heruliiler Küçük Asya’nın batı kıyıları boyunca ilerleyerek kıyıdaki birçok yerleşimi yağmalamışlardır. Yaklaşan Heruli tehlikesinin haberini önceden alan Aigai halkı, kamusal yapılar da dâhil olmak üzere kentteki binaların kapılarını duvar örerek kapatmış ve kenti terk etmiştir. Kentte yerleşim tekrar MS 12. yüzyıl sonlarında başlamıştır. Bu kısa süreli iskan sırasında, kentte küçük bir kilise inşa edilmiş ve kentteki kamu yapılarının tamamına yakını yıkılarak, kurşunları toplanmıştır.
