Abstract: The return of political and institutional history to historiographical debates has brought a series of benefits to historical knowledge. In fact, the study of power relations, which also involves the connections between social groups in each geopolitical space, only makes sense when we offer an approach where the political and the institutional appear effectively. Focusing our analysis on the Hispanic-Visigothic kingdom of Toledo in the 6th and 7th centuries, we will observe that the forces of aristocratic groups and regionalism emerged as a counterpoint to the royal power, thus causing acts of rebellion understood as treason to the pacts and oaths
made. Exile and confinement arose as a result of the application of royal justice that intended to curb those actions considered illegitimate. Of the examples indicated by the Hispano-Visigoth documentation, we highlight what was described by Valério do Bierzo, since we consider that his writings reveal such actions.

Interaction is a characteristic concept of Late Antiquity (II-VIII centuries). A prime example is the rapprochement between the Gothic barbarians and the civilized Roman aristocracy established in the territories of the Western Roman Empire since the beginning of the fifth century. Framed by conflict, followed by friendship and alliance, the relationship between Goths and Romans eventually favoured the former in institutional terms, with the creation of the regnum led by the latter, and the demise of Western imperial authority in the Roman provinces. If the regnum gothorum Tolosanum was short-lived, its Hispanic equivalent, the regnum gothorum Toletanum, began its existence thanks to the confrontation and subsequent rapprochement between Goths and Hispano-Roman aristocratic groups that enjoyed on the reigns of Theudis (531-548 †) and Leovigildo (569-586 †) the most notable moments of the process of conformation and strengthening of the Hispano-Visigothic monarchy of Toledo in the sixth century.

of the Historian regardless of the space-time clipping he analyzes. In fact, the mobilities are directly related to both the long-term process and to the set of facts and events linked to disputes in a given socio-political

Abstract The forms of Christian monastic life were widely extended during the Late Antiquity (II/VIII centuries) in the Mediterranean world. Among the existing rules in the context of the Visigothic kingdom (VI/VII centuries), in this study we aim to emphasize the monastic rule of Isidore of Seville, one of the most noticeable figures of the history of the Visigothic Hispania. Based on the Isidorian rule, this article seeks to find the elements available in the Bishop of Seville's work, which allow the characterization of the binomial monks/uiri sancti according to the coenobitical perspective, and recognized by the ecclesiastical hierarchies.

For the historian, establish a precise chronological marker is a difficult task completion. More complex even if the study period is framed with the stamp of a time of crisis, as Late Antiquity. Dubbed by some as the “Low Empire”, for others the “High Middle Ages”, the Late Antique world (II-VIII centuries) is presented as a carrier of “identity” as they pointed at the time Brown and Marrou, in which the idea of crisis should be replaced by more current as would be the transformation or retrofit concepts. In this study, based on political and institutional elements, we analyze how, gradually, became the passage of imperial power imposed on the choice of a single ruler to a multiplicity of emperors and kings always supported by aristocratic groups interested in participating and grant such powers in roman barbarian’s monarchies heirs of imperial authority in the Roman West. In particular, we take a special look to the Hispano Visigothic monarchy of the sixth and seventh centuries that kept some important political elements of Roman imperial past.

Throughout the seventh century, the Hispano-Visigoth kingdom of Toledo was the scene of several attempts of usurpation of royal power by aristocratic and noble segments rivals to the king and his closest political allies. Attitudes that reinforce the idea, present in the historiography of uncontrollable infidel’s rage important aristocratic-noble groups against the reigning monarch and against the kingdom. This tendency to betrayal, with the disruption of loyalty oaths provided the king, the morbo gothorum, appears in the sources as a true "political illness" that weakened the Hispano-Visigoth monarchic institution, leading the regnum gothorum to the internal confrontation and consequent disappearance in the early eighth century.

Roman Barbarians regna, constituted through the grant of Roman authority, laid themselves as immediate heirs of the late Roman imperial past and at the same time, took the old problems of a political nature that antagonized the reges and various aristocratic groups resisting the authority and power of those. For this reason the Roman Barbarians kings resorted to pragmatic strategies such as permanent state of conflict and theoretical and imagery, such as readjustment of previously existing symbols and rituals, to reinforce and legitimize their power and their political status. How effective example of these theoretical and practical actions, highlight the Hispanic Visigothic kingdom of Toledo (VI-VII centuries) during which involve the reigns of Leovigild (569-586) and Wamba (672-680).

The theory developed along the Late Antiquity looking, mostly to highlight the authority and power should be exercised by the king in the geographical area of his kingdom. Besides the obvious legacy of the classical Roman political thought, and suggested that the theoretical supremacy of the judge or the princeps regard to social and political body, the model of christian princeps christianus sacratissimus, which is built on the fourth century, offered the prospect of that the ruler should impose laws to enforce justice to the innocent. Such ideas were in the Hispanic visigothic kingdom of Toledo and both have signs in isidorians sources, the counciliars and leges antiquas. Howerver, the antithesis between theory and the practical exercise of power is very clear in aristocratic disputes directly affecting the power of the king and all its powers. This is the case of the reign of Chintila (636-640), in which the law had as it main objective the protection of groups of politicas support of the monarch.

Abstract: A discussion of the concept of identity has gained ample space in the academic and scientific debates. Concerning the Antiquities - Classical, Hellenistic and Late Antiquity - the theme of identity is directly linked with the notion of civic community that designs other important concepts such as homeland and the natio we demonstrate the need for pluralization of them. Although we believe that the relevant concept of gens, linked to the idea of ancestry and tradition, gained a great projection in Late Antiquity, especially in the Hispanic Visigoth kingdom of Toledo, highlighting the importance of aristocratic and nobility groups and setting from a sociocultural perspective the formation of an nobility identity that united them. Of several examples that we have, we highlight the Fructuoso of Braga, true model of an important member of the gentes of the Hispanic Visigoth kingdom of Toledo in the seventh century.

To this end, we use examples chronologically limited to the reign of Trajan (98-117) and Gothorum Regnum of Aquitaine (418-507).

The Hispano-Visigoth Kingdom of Toledo can be considered as a typical institutional setting of Late Antiquity. The century marked between the conversion of the Goths to Catholicism (589) and the rebellion against the Duke Paul King Wamba (672) was characterized by various attempts at usurpation of royal power, demonstrating an intense dispute between the various aristocratic and nobility groups that questioned the authority and the legitimacy of kingship. Advocated by ecclesiastical segments of the kingdom, the Hispano-Visigoth royal councils met in an important vehicle to enhance their theoretical and ideological supremacy over the whole of Gothicae Gentes. This ecclesiastical environment important authors defended the legitimacy and power of the Hispano-Visigoth kingship emerged, among which the bishop Julian of Toledo, author of an interesting historical work, the Historia Wambae, source showed that the victory of legitimate and sacred princeps Wamba on the infidel and traitor Duke Paul.

From time immemorial man, in his individual and collective dimension, is concerned to establish a connection, a channel of connection, between himself and something that is superior to him, an entity that both in memory and in History we call divine. But what this deity would be, how to define it or present it, is one of the great problems that we face, and that the thinkers have always tried to offer some plausible answer. This question is difficult to resolve, effectively, but leads us to the fundamental theme of this work, that of the existence of multiple forms of religiosity practiced throughout the historical process and that attempt to respond to that questioning, particularly in the period we define as Late Antiquity.

Studies of political history are gaining projection in the early twenty-first century. The interest in the exercise of political power and the socio-political groups involved in political disputes gained a diachronic dimension, in that community life has generated since antiquity, consensus and frictions that have found various forms of resolution. In Late Antiquity ( II -VIII centuries ), marked by political and cultural influence of classical and Hellenistic Greco- Roman tradition, we observed the maintenance of legal practice and policy at the same time which penalized and punished those accused of acts of infidelity against the sovereign the imposition of the penalty of exile.
We observed that this practice is shown by the subsequent Hispanic gothic sources regnum gothorum subsequent conversion to Catholicism. In the present study we will offer a greater attention to the legacy of writings by John of Biclaro and Isidore of Seville, without forgetting other sources of legal and historical nature that contribute significantly to the contextual understanding, presenting us exiles and those suffering exiles, demonstrating a significant conceptual distinction between them and the banishment and outcasts.

Studies on the political and institutional transformations between centuries II and VIII in the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world gained a high profile in the last 20 years. In them, a significant number of experts chose to define that chronological cutout as Late Antiquity in which some elements, such as the sharing of power between different sovereign and his succession of hereditary form, point to the readjustment of policies and institutional practices that characterized the changes occurred between the Hellenistic and late periods. This line of analysis historical research directed towards socio-political approach in Late Antiquity are necessary, in particular to define concepts of great ideological importance such as genes and populus that, in our opinion, are the basis for the construction of what we define as the nobility identity related directly to the most outstanding political groups in political society supported by ancestral customs (mores) and link up with the imperial and royal powers. A very vivid example of this old late sociopolitical perspective is the hispanovisigodo kingdom of Toledo (VI / VII centuries), in which historical character works, chronicles and ecclesiastical and secular legislative sources are the basis for the establishment of these relations, and social distinctions and identity.
