In the mainstay of the debates about the discursive disputes between Christianauthors in Late Antiquity, this dissertation aimed to investigate in the biography ofMelania the Younger, the existence of a monastic identity in the hagiographicproduction of the author. Gerontius, Melania's biographer, disciple and chaplain, triedto demonstrate in his work how Melania's actions could serve as an example of anascetic and defender of the orthodox faith for the reading public. The work wasconceived in the mid 450's, years after the death of the protagonist in a moment ofprofound political, social and religious transformations in the Christian Mediterraneancommunity. In this way, we sought to understand and contextualize the emergence ofthe monastic movement, the ecclesiastical institution, and the structuraltransformations of the Late Roman Empire. From these considerations and aided withthe concepts of identity, holy man, and hagiographic discourse, the discursiveconstruction of the author making Melania his heroine was perceptible. On the otherhand, the comparison of the information given by Gerontius with others found indifferent sources further evidenced the ideological apparatus of the author. Thus, thework, more than a recital of information about this intriguing woman, is also the bearerof a religious identity and a monastic model, concepts that went beyond our first ideasabout the narrative.

The purpose of this text is to reflect upon the biographical production of Palladius, bishop of Helenopolis (Galatia, 363-430) about the nuns Melania the Elder (340-410) and Melania the Younger (383-439). His work, Lausiac History, was intended for the imperial chamberlain of Theodosius II, Lausus (400-450), seeking to narrate the lives of important monastic
personalities whom Palladius met during his travels around the Mediterranean Sea. Among the 71 monks and nuns biographed, the author reserves at least 3 chapters to describe the acts of the two Melanias - grandmother and granddaughter - who served as a great inspiration for the aristocratic female monasticism in the passage from the 4th to the 5th century. Themale view of Palladius about the performance of the two women allows us to perceive what his model of
feminine performance in Christian monasticism was, especially in the relationships built between master and disciple.
