Brazil Posts Record Federal Tax Revenue in January
Brazil's federal tax revenue saw real growth of 6.67% over a year ago, totaling BRL 280.636 billion in January 2024. That was the highest monthly value ever recorded in the government's series that began in 1995, mainly boosted by an inflow of BRL 4.1 billion from the taxation of closed-end funds with real growth of 24.41%. This increase was due to a measure implemented by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's administration last year, which eliminated tax advantages for these investments and allowed taxpayers to regularize accumulated income with discounts. The month's performance was also driven by a BRL 5.5 billion increase in the PIS/Cofins tax, attributed among other reasons to the reinstatement of taxation on gasoline.

Brazil Federal Tax Revenues Surpass Forecasts
Brazil's federal tax revenue totaled BRL 231.2 billion in December 2023, a 5.15% increase in real terms, above market forecasts of BRL 227.3 billion. However, in the cumulative period from January to December of 2023, the total revenue for the year amounted to BRL 2.318 trillion. It represents a decrease of 0.12% compared to the previous year, the first since 2020, influenced by changes in tax legislation and atypical payments.
