"UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
EDWARD KELLY, OF BABYS POINT, ONTARIO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAl R PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,483, dated October 29, 1878; application filed February 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KELLY, of Babys Point, county of Lambton and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented an Improvement in Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in the construction of hair-pins; and consists in constructing said pins in pairs secured together by means of elastic material connecting the heads of said pins, so that when the pins are inserted upon opposite sides of the braid the elastic material will hold them in place and prevent their being accidentally dislodged.
to the use already described, for the purpose of winding the back hair, thereby avoiding the necessity of using an additional string for that purpose.
In Fig. 2 a fine-wire coil-spring, which should beplat-ed, is employed, and may be' used when it is desired to make ornamental bands across the braid, which latter is secured by means of the pins. If preferred, the springs or bands may be connected with the pins by small swivels, which will allow the pins to be turned without danger of kinking the springconnections.
I am aware that hooks have been attached to shawl-pins by elastic cord, and that shawlpins have been made of two ball-pins connected together'by a non-elastic cord or a small'chain, and I hereby disclaim the same.
What I claim as my invention is- Asanew article of manufacture, hair-pins constructed in pairs, secured together by elastic connections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD KELLY.- Witnesses:
