CHECK ROW WIRE FOR COR-N PLANTERS,
Patented Nov. 11
N. PEYERS. Pholb-Lithagnphe with a'rnn'r tries.
AUSTIN O. EVANS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
CHECK RO NIRE FOR CORN PLANTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,755, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed June 20, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Austin 0. EvANs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Check-Row ires for Corn-Planters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of checkrow wires which are provided with equidistant operating-buttons, which serve not only to operate the check-row mechanism of the planter, but also to connect the ends of two adjacent links. Ordinarily the ends of the links within the buttons are connected to the buttons only, so that the buttons virtually become links themselves and have to bear the tension of the wire.
The novelty. of my invention consists in coupling the links directly together and inserting their coupled endsintoa button, which becomes swiveled upon them, serves to pro tect them, and at the same time permits of their being uncoupled whenever, as is the frequent practice in the field, it is desired to unjoint the wire to carry it around a tree or for any other purpose.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved buttons readyto be applied to the wire. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view with the button applied to the wire. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
The same letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in all the ures.
The button A is preferably a malleable shell, with rounded heads a, containing perforations b for the passage of the links of the wire. It is cut away on each side, as shown, leaving the connecting-pieces c, and has slots (1 through each head in line with each other and opening into the perforations b. In Fig. 1 these slots are shown open sufficiently to enable the button to be slipped over the coupled ends of two adjacent links, after which, by pressure, they are closed, as seen in Fig. .2, to prevent the accidental removal of the but ton.
The links Bare connected together in the usual way, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
(No model.)
From this construction it will be seen that the buttons are swiveled on the links, while at the same time the coupled ends of thelinks are protected by the button, which encompasses them, and the doubled back ends of the loops of the links rest and are confined in the perforations b of the button, thereby taking the strain off of the ends of the wires ,as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and as will be readily understood.
When it is desired to unjoint the wires at any point, it is only necessary to spread open the slots of any of the buttons, remove the same, and unjoint the wire. The recoupling can be as readily effected.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim-- 7 l. A check-row wire whose links are coupled directly together and the ends turned back, as described, in combination with a button enveloping the connected ends of the links and their turned-back ends, substantially as described.
2. A check-row wire whose links are con nected directly together and the ends turned back, as described, in combination with a removable button enveloping the connected ends of the links and their turned-back ends, substantially as described.
3. A button for check-row wires adapted to envelop and protect the coupled ends of the links and their turned-back ends, and having end perforations, through which the links and the turned-back ends pass, and 1ongitudinal slots opening into said perforations, substantially as described.
4:. A button for check-row wires enveloping and protecting the coupled ends of the links and their turned-back ends, and swiveled thereon, substantially as described.
5. A removable button forcheckrow wires enveloping and protecting the coupled ends of the links and their turned-back ends, and swiveled thereon, substantially as described.
6. In a cheek-row wire, and in combination with the enveloping button, as described, the link-couplings within the button bent back and inserted into perforations in the end of the same, substantially as specified.
AUSTIN e. EVANS.
Witnesses: V. H. GRIFFITH, E. BOWMAN.
