Description

G. n. HAWORTH.
CORN-PLANTER.
No. 7,235. Ressued Ju1y18.181/5.
UNITED STATES GEORGE I). HAWORTH,
PATENT, OFFICE.
or DEcA'rUR., 1mm-fois.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRN-PLANTERS.
Specitication forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,747, dated January 14, 1873; reissue No. 7,235, dated July 18, 1876; application liled June 27, 1376.
DIVISION B.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. HAwoR'rH, of Decatur, county ot Macon and State of' 1llinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Cord for Goru- Planters, of which the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciticatiou, in which- Figure l is a plan or side view ot' the ends of two sections or lengths of my improved check-row c ord, showing the coupling-hooks. Fig.'2 shows the two hooks turned into position for colmecting ordisconnectiug them', and
Fi g. 3 is a view similar to Fiu. l \vitlrtl1e parts reversed or'inverted.l i
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in all 'the iigures.:
My invention consists in making a checkrow cord designed for use upon acorn-planter for actuating the seeding mechanism in see tions of cord provided ,at each end with lan open hook, adapting it to be connected with a corresponding hook on the end of another section said hooks haring knobs or spurs formed upon them, which, when the twoare united, shall constitute the knot or projection for actuating the seeding mechanism; also in certain details of construction lot'said coupling-hooks, adapting .themI to be readily and iirmly united Vto the. ends ot' the sections ot' cord, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, .A represents portions of the check-row cord or small rope employed as possessing the requisite pliability, adapting it to pass readily around the guiding-pulleys (showniu another division of this application) for transferring the cord from one side'ot themaehine to the other in its passage over the same. B B are two of the hooks or coupling-pieces, made ot' metal, andV provided each with a malleable shank, fig-adapted to receive and rn'ily clasp the end oi the cord or rope, as shown.
1n the drawings, the shaniis are shown as bent into theform ofH 'tubes or sleeves surrounding the endlof the eordand broken away in places, Figs. 1 and l :e show a. pointed spur, 11.', which penetrates te cord, or around which the end of the cord is looped, as shown, to pre vent its accidental withdrawal, afterthe shank is bent into the sleeve form, grasping the cord.` The spur is shown in dotted lilies in Fig. 3. The shank, when bent into the cylindrical or sleeve iorin shown, is prei'erabl5v mode slightly tapering from the hook end, for the purpose ot' adopting it to readily enter the fork in the lever-arms which aetuate the seeding devices, and also for giving increased bulk and strength ot' metal at thc end united to the hook.
width at or near its point ot'junctiou with the mit, luid at or near its opposite or open ing knobs or points c c', as Shown,` and Ilottencd or revcrsely expanded between said points for securing the requisite strength ot' metal while adapting the hooks to readily turn one within the other; forming a universaljointconnection when united. Thus formed, the hooks can be united or separated only when brought into a certain angle ot' relation to each other, substantially that-represented in Fig. 2, and consequently all danger of' their becoming accidentally detached when in use is obviated, while at the same time the series of points or spurs c i 'ormedon the hooks, four in number, when .wo hooks are united` constitute an enlarglunent,1 knob, or knot upon the cordt'or actuating the forked levers of the' corn-planter, and through -said 'lever theseediug devices. The hooks turn within euch other,.aiid, being short, pass readily around the guiding or transferring pulleys rc- Iwith the shank or sleeve.
apart of' the rows of corn to be planted,` thi check-row cord can be readily long-tbe l or field to be opera-ted upon, b v 'simply sibling or removing the sections, as required. The method of using aeheclecord is woll known, and need not be here described..
The open hook is made in the peculiar form `lrepresented--that is to say, expanded in end, where, also, it is provided with project@ Ferred'to, thus preventing any undue strain or*I wear upon the cord at its point or' junction;
With a. supply ot the sections A, provideel with the open couplinghooks il, and made oil.; uniform length, conforming to the distance'l lshortened to -adapt it tp thc lepgth or wiiiiia of 2 'mas Having now described luy invention, what I claim in this division ot' my application, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1; check-row cord composed of short sections, provided with the open books Bfhaving the projecting spurs or points c c', arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The open hooks B, provided with the v open Shanks b, adpted to be closed around and united to the ends of Vthe cord, as descri f as and for the purpose eet'l forth.
3. The hooks B,l provided wlththe open Shanks b, a'ndretainug-spur's b,'sdbstantially l 4. The combinatioxnwith the secfions A of a check-row cord, of the open hooks B, provided with the spurs or knobs c c',and Shanks b. havingthe retaining-points b. substantially as and* for the purpose set forth.
