IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM-STAYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.003, dated March 21, 1876; application-filed February 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs H. ANDERSON, of Newton, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use fal Improvements in Broom-Stays; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference pein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustalrle stay for brooms, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction andoperation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a broom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ot'my broom stay.
A represents an ordinary broom, with binding a and handle B. My adjustable broomstay is formed of two pieces of wire, 0 G, bent in the center in U form, and placed with their arms overlapping each other, and spiral springs 11 b placed thereon, as shown, the ends of the wires being bent to prevent them being drawn through the springs. The stay thus formed is provided with one or more cross-Wires, d
which pass through the broom; and the stay adjusts itself to any sized broom, as it can be expanded, and the springs I) draw it together to fit the broom. To protect the broom-straw the bends of the wires 0 O are provided with rubber tubes h h, as shown, passing around the edges of the broom. The adjustable stay is provided on one or both sides with a brace,
D, made of a single piece of wire bent in triangular form, the ends hinged to the stay, and the center coiled to form springs c e and a loop, said loop being inserted under one of the stitches of the binding a, thus holding the stay in place.
Through the coils 6 may be passed a ring, E, for convenience in hanging up the broom.
This invention may be applied to brushes as well as to brooms.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The adjustable broom stay herein described, consisting of the U-shaped wires 0 0, having its ends overlapping each other, and springs b b, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the bent wires 0 O, springs b b, and one or more cross wires, d, as shown and described.
3. The rubber tubes h, in combination with the adjustable broom-stay O b, for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination of the adjustable broomstay 0 b and brace 1), formed with the coils e e and loop f, and held under the binding of the'broom, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. ANDERSON.
