Claims (22)
- 액정 디스플레이 장치에 있어서,제1 기판과,제2 기판과,상기 제1 기판과 상기 제2 기판 사이에 배치된 액정층과,상기 액정층과 대면하는 상기 제1 기판의 표면 상에 제공된 제1 전극과, 상기 제2 기판 상에 제공되어 상기 제1 전극에 상기 액정층을 통해 대향하는 제2 전극에 의해 각각 한정되는 복수개의 화소 영역과,상기 제1 기판 및 제2 기판의 외측에 각각 제공되고 그 편광축이 서로에 대해 직교하도록 배치된 한 쌍의 편광판을 포함하며,상기 제1 전극은 상기 복수개의 화소 영역의 각각에 복수개의 개구 및 중실부를 포함하며,상기 액정층은, 상기 제1 전극과 상기 제2 전극 사이에 전압이 인가되지 않을 때, 상기 복수개의 화소 영역 각각에서 수직 배향 상태에 있게 되고, 상기 제1 전극과 상기 제2 전극 사이에 전압이 인가될 때, 상기 제1 전극의 상기 복수개의 개구의 각각의 모서리부에 생성된 경사 전계에 의해 상기 복수개의 개구 및 중실부에 각각 방사상 경사 배향 상태에 있는 복수개의 액정 도메인이 형성되어, 상기 인가된 전압에 따라 상기 복수개의 액정 도메인의 배향 상태를 변화시킴으로써 디스플레이를 행하고,상기 복수개의 액정 도메인 각각에서, 상기 액정층에 포함되고 상기 복수개의 액정 도메인의 각각의 중심에 대해 디스플레이 표면 상의 12시 방향으로 위치된 액정 분자가 디스플레이 표면 상의 12시 방향에 대해 각도 θ만큼 경사질 때, 상기 한 쌍의 편광판들 중 한 편광판의 편광축은 상기 디스플레이 표면 상의 12시 방향으로 위치된 상기 액정 분자의 경사 방향과 동일한 방향으로 상기 디스플레이 표면 상의 12시 방향에 대해 0도 보다는 크고 2θ보다 작은 각도만큼 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 개구들 중 적어도 일부는 동일한 형상 및 크기를 가지며, 회전 대칭성을 갖도록 배열된 적어도 하나의 단위 격자를 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 개구들 중 적어도 일부의 각각의 형상은 회전 대칭성을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 개구들 중 적어도 일부의 각각의 형상은 원형인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 개구들 중 적어도 일부에 의해 둘러싸인 중실부의 각각의 영역은 원형인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제2항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 개구들 중 적어도 일부에 의해 둘러싸인 중실부의 각각의 영역은 원호 형상의 코너를 갖는 직사각 형상인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 화소 영역의 각각에서, 상기 제1 전극의 상기 복수개의 개구의 전체 면적은 상기 제1 전극의 상기 중실부의 면적보다 작은 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 복수개의 개구의 각각의 내측에 있는 돌기를 더 포함하며,상기 기판의 평면 방향을 따라 취한 상기 돌기의 단면 형상은 대응하는 개구의 형상과 동일하고, 상기 돌기의 측면은 경사 전계에 의해 얻어진 배향 규제 방향과 동일한 방향으로 상기 액정층의 액정 분자를 배향하기 위한 배향 규제력을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 복수개의 액정 도메인은 나선형 방사상 경사 배향 상태에 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.

- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 한 쌍의 편광판들 중 한 편광판의 편광축은 0도 보다는 크고 θ이하의 각도만큼 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 한 쌍의 편광판들 중 한 편광판의 편광축은 θ/2와 동일한 각도만큼 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 한 쌍의 편광판들 중 한 편광판의 편광축은 θ와 동일한 각도만큼 경사지는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 액정 디스플레이 장치에 있어서,제1 기판과,제2 기판과,상기 제1 기판과 상기 제2 기판 사이에 배치된 액정층과,상기 액정층과 대면하는 상기 제1 기판의 표면 상에 제공된 제1 전극과, 상기 제2 기판 상에 제공되어 상기 제1 전극에 상기 액정층을 통해 대향하는 제2 전극에 의해 각각 한정되는 복수개의 화소 영역을 포함하며,상기 제1 전극은 상기 복수개의 화소 영역의 각각에 복수개의 개구 및 중실부를 포함하며,상기 액정층은, 상기 제1 전극과 상기 제2 전극 사이에 전압이 인가되지 않을 때, 상기 복수개의 화소 영역 각각에서 수직 배향 상태에 있게 되고, 상기 제1 전극과 상기 제2 전극 사이에 전압이 인가될 때, 상기 제1 전극의 상기 복수개의 개구의 각각의 모서리부에 생성된 경사 전계에 의해 상기 복수개의 개구 및 중실부에 각각 방사상 경사 배향 상태에 있는 복수개의 액정 도메인이 형성되어, 상기 인가된 전압에 따라 상기 복수개의 액정 도메인의 배향 상태를 변화시킴으로써 디스플레이를 행하고,상기 중실부는 m×n 매트릭스 형상으로 배열된 복수개의 섬 형상부와, 상기 복수개의 섬 형상부의 인접한 쌍들을 전기 접속하는 복수개의 분지부(branch portion)를 포함하며,상기 복수개의 분지부의 수는 (2mn - m - n)보다 작은 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 제1 기판은 상기 복수개의 화소 영역의 각각에 대응하여 제공된 액티브 소자를 더 포함하며,상기 제1 전극은 상기 액티브 소자에 의해 절환되도록 상기 복수개의 화소 영역의 각각에 제공된 화소 전극에 대응하고, 상기 제2 전극은 상기 복수개의 화소 전극에 대향하는 적어도 하나의 대향 전극에 대응하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 디스플레이 장치.
