952,773. Rail vehicle draw gear. A. B. C. COUPLER & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 27, 1962 [Sept. 26, 1961], No. 34464/61. Heading B7T. A railway vehicle draw gear shown with a sleeve 14 having a spring compressing bolt 18 which is removed before operation, comprises a yoke 3 around a main spring 10, followers 9, 11 co-operating with stops 21, 22 fixed to the vehicle frame, a coupler head 1 pivoted about a horizontal pin 4 to an intermediate member 2 pivotally connected to a vertical yoke pin 5 and abutting the follower 9, an auxiliary spring 12, and a sleeve 6 abutting the head 1 and at its other end having wings 6<SP>11</SP> abutting the follower 9. Draft loads are taken first by the spring 12 until the yoke 3 contacts the follower 11 and then by the spring 10, whilst buff loads transmitted by the member 2 and the sleeve 6 are taken by 10 only. Drooping of the head 1 exerts a pull on the member 2 and the yoke 3 which is resisted by the spring 12, and forces exerted during angling on a curve causes the wings 6<SP>11</SP> to compress the spring 10 and the yoke 3 to move and compress the spring 12. Instead of the two follower plates 9, 11, a single plate may be employed, fastened to one end of a spring fixed at its other end or acting at an intermediate point of a spring fixed at both ends.
