Abstract

In a process for separating a mixture of organic compounds by countercurrent contact with two solvents, the two solvents are separately treated to recover the desired mixed compounds and the residual solvents are then mixed and separated again to recover quantities of solvent from the other solvent phase.ALSO:In the separation of o- and p-nitrobenzoic acids with water and chloroform or o- and m-nitroaniline with benzene and water by intimately contacting the mixture with the solvents in countercurrent to form two phases, recovering the separated compounds mixing the residual solvents and separating them again preferably by decantation.ALSO:In the separation of aromatics from petroleum distillates by the sulphur dioxide process or the separation of benzene and toluene or paraffin in the 300-500 DEG F. range with aniline furfural or phenol and nonane or decane, the mixture is intimately contacted with two of the solvents in countercurrent to form extract eraffinate phases, the boiling point of both solvents being either above or below the boiling point of the mixture, the two phases are fractionated, the residual solvents mixed and then separated again, preferably by decantation.
