Abstract

Naphtha fractions are separated into their aromatic and paraffinic constituents by solvent extraction with a specified selective solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons and a paraffinic co-solvent, both the solvent and the co-solvent having a boiling point at least 50 DEG F. above the <PICT:0812114/III/1> end boiling point of the petroleum oil. The aromatics are recovered from the solvent phase and the paraffins from the cosolvent phase by distillation and the solvent and co-solvent are recycled to the extraction zone. The specified solvents are the alkane dinitriles, dimethyl hydantoin, N-alkyl pyrrolidones, gamma butyrolactone, the cyanoethers of diethylene glycol, and tri- and tetraethylene glycol. The preferred co-solvents are straight- or singly-branched chain C10-16 hydrocarbon fractions boiling between 350 DEG and 550 DEG F. The extraction zone may be operated at 50 DEG to 300 DEG F. with a solvent : feed ratio of 0.5-2:1 and a cosolvent : solvent ratio of 0.1-1:1. Feed is introduced through line 2, passing through preheater 4 to the middle of extraction column 6. Solvent esters at the top of the column from line 22 passes downwards dissolving the aromatic constituents of the feed, and is removed from the bottom of the column via line 24 and passed to distillation column 32. In column 32 the aromatic extract is distilled off and removed via line 34 while the solvent is passed via lines 36 and 28 to separator 30. The cosolvent enters at the bottom of column 6 via line 14, passes upwards dissolving the paraffinic fraction and is removed via line 8 and passed to distillation column 10. In column 10 the paraffinic constituents of the feed are distilled off and removed via line 26 while the co-solvent passes via line 28 to separator 30. The solvent and co-solvent separate into two phases in separator 30 and are recycled to lines 22 and 6 via lines 20 and 14 respectively.
