Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene, toluene and xylene, are separated from hydrocarbon mixtures by counter-current contact with a solvent comprising N-methylpyrrolidone and 10-40% by volume of water in an amount of at least 6 parts by weight of solvent per part or aromatic material in the mixture and an antisolvent consisting of a low-boiling hydrocarbon or an extract reflux in an amount of 0.2-5 times that of the extract obtained. A suitable non-aromatic counter-solvent boiling below the aromatics may be obtained by distillation from the raffinate. The solvent and counter-solvent are recovered by distillation and reused and the aromatic extract may be fractionated into its components.
